Mike Coman - a man of the match performance.
NOBM premiers went into Saturdays match expecting a tough encounter at Elwood Park. We weren't disappointed, as it turned out to be an intense physical encounter played at pace. An excellent platform was established by the OBM forward pack, that were dominant throughout most of the match, in particular at scrum and lineout time. A halftime score of 17-10, following tries to Coman and Collier, the game was certainly there for the taking and we saw signs in ther second half that we would finish the stronger. And so it proved with further tries to O'Leary, Semeane and Rukuwai and, more importantly, a bonus point.
O'Leary, Semeane and Alcock were well in charge in the front row, Thompson dominated the lineout, Cam Devine, playing out of position at lock, and showing great club commitment worked hard all day in the second row. The loose forwards, Coman, Fatialofa and Robertson linked well and outplayed their opponents, Mike Coman in particular leading by example with a man of the match performance. It's difficult to single out any one individual in the forwards really as everyone really contributed from the starting eight to those that came ofF the bench, (Rahui, Chambers and Miller).
Out wide, the displays from Clements, Paumau and Liam Rukuwai at fullback were highlights. Mark Collier at centre ran with confidence and defended well, whilst Wiggins and Milo Lauano were busy on the wings and looked likely often with ball in hand.
Well done everyone, Trophies in the bag (Harris Shield / McKew Cup), and a very colourful group of footballers resplendid in their tropical ensembles can now look forward to the challenge that presents itself next Saturday, in the form of Havelock North. Signs are, . . . . we can approach this game, with a degree of confidence. A quick note of thanks to those supporters that made the trip across to Hastings, as always, Your support was be appreciated. And we look forward to having your support again next week at Anderson Park vs Havelock North.

Pratt Trophy RICHARD KEPKA BUILDERS LTD Old Boys Marist Premier Development 34 PORONGAHAU 20 We arrived late down in Porongahau to find a lot of surface water on the field. The Ref wouldn’t let us delay kickoff so we had a 5 min warm up and were then straight into it. We scored first when Phil took the ball off the back of the scrum 5m out and drove over. However we then made a few mistakes and Porongahau caught us off guard with a lineout drive seeing them go over. They were a typical Porongahau team with big forwards who like the one off stuff.
We had it all over them out wide but the ground conditions weren’t really conducive for free flowing rugby. We also struggled to get our continuity going as we were getting the ball turned over in the tackle quite frequently. Phil scored his 2nd try of the day in similar fashion to the first giving us a 12-10 lead at the break.
Porongahau were the first to score after the break after we fell off some tackles before Phil picked up his hattrick following another 5m scrum. With 20 to go we were down 20-17 but we finished the game strongly with tries to Sam M & Iopu seeing us run out 34-20 winners. It is always difficult travelling down there and we were happy enough taking away the maximum 5 points.
Full time: 34-20. Half Time 12-10. Tries Phil Stirling (3), Sam Miringaorangi, Iopu Luano. Conversions Sam Miringaorangi 1, Sam Williams 2. Penalties Sam W 1.

SIDELINE BAR Old Boys Marist Div. Three 28 MARAENUI 50
We played the unbeaten Maraenui team at ‘The Nui’ and had the best start with a quick blindside move which put Chris Lincoln in the clear and with his speed left everyone behind to score under the bar after a 70 meter run ! Hayden Karekare converted 7 – 0. Unfortunately, we didn’t help cover behind deep enough and ex OBM Prem, Tama Pineaha, kicked cleverly into the corners and Maraenui were rewarded with two quick tries from this to lead 7 – 14.
Again the deep kick was used and we made the mistake of trying to run it out and instead of giving the ball to the man in the clear we tried to muscle out , got stripped of the ball, which was kicked through, got the bounce and another sevens points against 7 – 19. We got Chris into the clear again he burned off the cover to score under the posts to close the gap 14 – 19. Unfortunately we couldn’t control the kick off and The ‘Nui scored immediately1 14 - 26.
Maraenui were putting in some good drives, which committed our loosies and then another kick deep saw them under the posts 14 – 33 which took us into halftime! Things had been a bit testy and Maraenui with the luxury of having 10 reserves were putting plenty of pressure on but our defence was holding up well. A quick tap from a free kick gave them numbers on the short side and we didn’t react quick enough to stop them scoring in the corner! 14 – 38. A good drive and quick passing again gave Chris enough room to again show his pace and he was under the bar again 21 - 38. A good midfield break, and good support from hardworking prop Ritchie Williams saw Jason Bright get the bounce and his turn to score under the bar. KJ Dooney converted 28 – 38. The ‘Nui came back again and a good break by Bossie Forster saw them capitalize on a disorganized defence and score out wide 28 –43.
Right on full time we were holding out big time but didn’t get the refs decision on a loose ball over the line when we thought we had touched down first, and the ‘Nui got another try right on the whistle 28 – 48. We know what mistakes we made and look forward to our rematch against a good Maraenui team ! Tom Hayton deserved his player of the day award and good efforts from “French” Damien Barte, Cam Burn,Quentin Waihape,. Mitch Gardner, Mike Mitchell, Brad Woodford , “Naki & Richie Williams in the forwards ensured that Maraenui knew they had been in a hard game! Our backs also showed what they can do when given the chance but we need more urgency covering our fullback.

DAVMET Old Boys Marist Colts 7 ONGA-TIKO 31
In sunny conditions at Tremain Field the Colts took on competition front runners Onga Tiko. Missing were a number of players and we were unable to field a trained front row, it was always going to be tough going. Early pressure from Onga Tiko had them out to an early 5-0 lead. However moments late we found ourselves in the lead after a great long range try by Spencer which was converted. Unfortunately that was our lot for the day as we were unable to score any more points. But to the credit of our boys we made life tough for Onga, disrupting their ball and forcing them into making errors. The team is looking forward to hopefully registering its first win next week against Tamatea.

Affiliate Secondary Schools 1st XV results Sat 12 May - Napier Boys High 80 - 8 Hastings R&S Colts : Central North Island Championship: St Johns College 17 - 52 St Paul's Collegiate, (Hamilton)
DID YOU KNOW THAT members of the successful 1987 Napier Marist Premier team keep your ear to the ground, there is a rumour around that a reunion of your old side is being mooted. In case you've forgotten 1987 was the year of the 'treble' - winning the Spillane Tournament, the Nash Cup and the Maddison Trophy - 'Those Were the Days' THAT I couldn't help but chuckle at Dominion Post sports editor Toby Robson's Team Talk column during the week with his take on the struggling Blues. Reckons Kim Dotcom has launched a bid to own and coach the Blues next season. Not really, but someone should ask. The 'Megaupload Blues' has a real ring to it. !
THAT the London New Zealand RFC is the only club outside of New Zealand to have Speights on tap ! A great attraction for recruiting kiwi rugby players on their OE.
THAT inform Hurricanes half TJ Perenara was somewhat miffed that he has been denied by the NZRU the opportunity to gain selection for the NZ Under 20's side for the upcoming Junior World Championship in South Africa which is being payed during the three week break in Super Rugby. The former NZ Secondary Schools captain hed been really keen to claim a second YWC winner's medal. THAT it will be a step back in time with the a North v South match is to be played at the Forsyth Barr stadium on the June 10 as as part of the recovery package to assist in recovering some of the funds that were lost be the previously 'belly up' Otago RFU. The actual income from the game will go to the Dunedin CC who assisted in bailing out the previously troubled union. Coaches of the two sides yet to be selected will be former All Black assistant Tony Gilbert who will run the southern side and the North Island XV will be coached by former All Black captain Graham Mourie.
THAT it was David & Goliath stuff last night at the Melbourne's AAMI stadium when the lowly ranked Rebels erased the title contenders Crusaders against all odds. What a gutsy 3 tries to one and keeping the visitors scoreless in the second forty performance. I must admit that with my long association with Australia's AFL capital I have favoured the Rebels as my second side after the Canes. They may not go any further in 2012 but they can certainly chalk up that morale boosting result.......Ed
++++ Who aims at excellence will be above mediocrity; who aims at mediocrity will be far short of it.
THEY SAID IT
"Peter tripped over when he was attempting to pick up a water bottle." HBI Premiers manager Andy Robertson on his assistant Peter Bainbridge having to have his injury treated by the teams physios before last Saturdays game vs Tech kicked off. In fact the incident featured as a six column wide headline of the HB Today's rugby reports - 'NOBM assistant manager injured - before match even starts'. Bam will take a bit of living this one down. “He was whitebaiting when I talked to him today. He’s been running up and down the side of a river. One of the criteria of selection was two pound of whitebait. So there’s always some benefits.” Graham Henry makes a joke about the call-up of Stephen Donald to the All Black team for the RW Cup Final.
"You're jazzing around like a back, I want you in the forwards, in the tough stuff where you belong. Take it or leave it. If you"re not going to listen then a bus leaves for Hamilton every hour and you'll be on the next one." A Fred 'the Needle' Allen's tongue lashing of Colin Meads at an All Blacks practice in Auckland.

The Leprechaun Comments
Paddy Sending a Present Home Casey had done well at work, he'd been made acting foreman on the building site and given a big rise in pay. Naturally, he decided to share his good fortune with the folks back home in Ireland. He searched hard and long for the ideal present for mum and dad and settled on a beautiful gold-rimmed mirror for the hallway. He duly parcelled and posted it, little knowing the reaction it would arouse back home.
'Come here!' called Casey Senior, staring into the mirror. 'Mary, come and see how your son has aged since he went to that Protestant country.'
Mother leaned over father's shoulder, saw her own reflection and said:
'I'm not surprised! Look at the ugly old hag he's living with!'

NAPIER OLD BOYS MARIST JUNIOR RUGBY Sat. 12th May > Results supplied
Napier Collision Repairs 12th Grade -This was never going to be easy playing Taradale at Taradale but we played a great brand of rugby. It was fairly even in the first half with the score line 12-7 to us. Second half our boys took the game to a different level and with some great forward play gave the backs some room to move and score some great tries. Taradale fancied their chances and thought they could take the game to us up front but a hungry forward pack destroyed their pack. Pauly our winger played and score two great tries and got Player of the Day. Final score was 29-7. Thanks to all the support that we had in Taradale.
Bayswater Vehicles 9th Grade -We had an early game out in Flaxmere with a 9am kick off. After the disapointing loss the week before our boys were on fire againist Wests were a big team and had some big kids in the team. Coach Trevor has been working on getting all the boys passing etc it really paid off with a great open running game....Nice to see the support of some players who ended up scoring from some great backing up. The boys are really starting to play like a team that is on fire. Tommy was our Player of the Day. Fulltime score was 65-5.
