DID YOU KNOW

THAT recent standouts in the successful Brendon Ratcliffe coached Napier Boys' High School 1st XV,  Leo and Tyrone Thompson have joined Marist St Pat's, the talented twins who were former Napier OBM Juniors have been contracted by the Wellington Academy.  They were both key players in a successful 2018 season that saw Napier Boys High the Hurricanes Schools champions,  Moascar Cup winners and National ‘Top Four’ runners-up.  Tyrone captained the side as a hooker while Leo plays in the midfield.  Their talents will definitely be of benefit our Wellington NZM affiliates and certainly a case of NOBM’s loss and MSP’s gain.

THAT the young tourists from both Chile and Argentina had a hit out match against a combined St John’s College 1st XV / U15 side during the past week at Tremain Field.  The fairly evenly balance game which saw both sides cross for 4 or 5 tries apiece was played in great spirit and from all reports the visitors were really buzzing afterwards from playing against some Kiwi boys and especially the Pacific Islanders in the St John’s side.

Some of these players are likely to be meeting up again in a couple of months time when the St John’s 1st XV are on their upcoming tour of Chile.

THAT
an important reminder to all players, members who received awards (trophies) at our 2018 Dinner and Presentation of Trophies function >>> If YOU are still in possession of your cup could you please return it back to the clubrooms so that it placed on display along with the others.  Either bring it along to training and give it to your coach or hand it in over the club bar.

THAT advance notice of an upcoming  -  Race Night Fundraising Event

The St Johns College Rugby Foundation is hosting the inaugural SJC Race Night.  This is a fundraising evening to help raise money towards two St Johns College rugby teams travelling to Chile in April 2019  (the 1st XV and Emerging Players sides)  as well as towards the continued development of SJC rugby:

Date: Friday 1st March

Start time: 6.30pm until 11.30pm

Venue: St Johns College Gymnasium (Father Barry O'Connor Centre)

Dress Code: Day at the Races - horse racing theme - or whatever you would wear to the races…it really is down to your imagination!

Entry: Tickets are $40 which includes a buffet meal fully catered by the nationally recognised SJC culinary arts students as well as live entertainment and a fundraising auction.  More details coming to our readers this week…….

THAT here’s another Flashback from TeamTalk  (June 2010)   ‘Latest clubman to chalk up his 50 Premier games for the Tremain OB Marist Premiers is veteran lock Steve Smithers. In the twilight of his rugby career and enjoying his rugby with the OB Marist thirds Steve has had a regular call-up over recent seasons to help out the Prems.  Steve is also co-coach of our well performing OBM 12th grade Juniors.  Congrats Steve.

As we all know Steve carried on with a coaching role on retirement initially with our Premier Development and of recent seasons as head coach of our premiers of the future – our Napier Collision Repair NOBM Colts.  And over this period a regular stream of these talented young players are making their mark on moving on up to our clubs Premier ranks.

THAT where is he now?  Mike Coman our former Premier and Magpies captain (2010-13) and the clubs 2012 KR Tremain Sportsman of the Year headed off on his rugby OE at the end of the 2013 season.  He signed, played for and captained Edinburgh (2013-16).  Mike then moved south to London in 2016 where he is currently playing for the London Irish Club

THAT here is another old Irish Proverb -  Forgetting a debt doesn’t mean its paid !

 THAT former coach of the Magpies Peter Russell who has since had the role of head coach of the Newcastle Falcons followed by mentor of top Japanese side the NEC Green Rockets, is now heading back to NZ.  This season he will take on the position as head coach of the Manawatu Turbos.  A onetime Upper Hutt RFC premier player until he moved into coaching as the mentor of the MSP Colts before moving up to our Wellington NZ Marist affiliate The MSP clubs premier side where he guided them to take out three Wellington titles over four seasons.

Moving into rep rugby he helped Wairarapa Bush to promotion from the division 3 to division 2 before taking on the position of as head coach of the Magpies for five seasons (2007/2011).  I’m sure Hawkes By rugby followers will watch with interest just how our former Vikings partners perform under Peter’s coaching in the Mitre10 Championship this season.

THAT if you know of anyone that is interested in joining our regular TeamTalk  mailouts  then please forward their name and email address to  - eddiewilson@xtra.co.nz   New members and supporters of our Rugby and affiliates Marist sports club always Welcome.

THAT a reminder to our readers – If  YOU would like to contribute or offer your comments, complaints re rugby in general or our Club, then send aLetter to the Editor’.   Please feel free to email your contributions to – eddiewilson@xtra.co.nz     We look forward to your comments and thoughts.  Don’t bottle it up or tell someone else contact  TeamTalk  today.

THEY SAID IT

On England's new look against Australia: "This looks a good team on paper, let's see how it looks on grass."
English rugby scribe.

“Mate I think he’s fantastic. The reason he does well is because he’s not a structured player.”
Aussies David Campese on All Black Damian McKenzie…
and continues….”If you are unpredicteable you can still survive, that’s why you’ve got McKenzie and Beauden Barrett as well.  When you’ve got flair it’s impossible to coach.”

"Remember that rugby is a team game; all 14 of you make sure you pass the ball to Jonah."

    The Leprechaun Comments

Walking into the bar, Shamus said to O'Heir the bartender, 'Pour me a stiff one - just had another fight with the little woman.'

'O, bejabbers,' said O'Heir, 'And how did this one end?'

'Hah, when it was over,' Shamus replied, 'she came to me on her hands and knees.'

'Really?' cried O'Heir, 'now that's a switch!  What did she say?'

She said, 'Come out from under the bed, Shamus, you little chicken.'

 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Two Irishmen met and one said to the other, 'Have ye seen Mulligan lately, Pat?'
Pat answered, 'Well, I have and I haven't.'
His friend asked, 'Shure, and what d'ye mean by that?'
Pat replied, 'It's like this, y'see...I saw a chap who I thought was Mulligan, and he saw a chap that he thought was me. And when we got up to one another...it was neither of us.'
 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Paddy, Deion and Bruce were three passengers in a light plane.  The aircraft got into difficulties and they needed to bale out, unfortunately there were only two parachutes. The first, Paddy, was the Irish Mastermind Champion. The second, Deion, was an American Hall of Fame Footballer.  The third, Bruce, was an Australian dual Olympic Games Champion.

The conversation went thus, Paddy said, 'There have been many American Hall of fame footballers and several people have won Olympic Gold medals, but there has only ever been one Irish Mastermind Champion.  So I'll take the first parachute and you two can fight it out for the last one'.

With that Paddy took a parachute and leapt out of the plane, which incidentally, by now was in considerable distress.

'How shall we decide who has the last parachute?', Deion asked Bruce.' No worries',

Bruce said, 'Yonder Irish Mastermind Champion has jumped out with my rucksack'.
