THAT we take this opportunity to give our readers an update on the Hawkes Bay Global Academy  -

The academy offers aspiring international players the same rugby experience as local Hawkes Bay Rugby high performance players.  Not only do players receive world class rugby tuition, they will also experience once in a lifetime NZ experiences.

The academy members will train alongside the best local rugby talent in the Hawkes Bay. Each member receives a personalised folder to document the information they will receive from the professional rugby staff in the areas of Technical, Tactical, Strength and Conditioning, Mental Skills, Nutrition and Leadership.  Players will complete individual 1 on 1s with the Magpies coaches and get their games videoed and coded for individual analysis and feedback.

During their time in New Zealand, the Hawkes Bay Global Academy members will experience some of the best NZ has to offer.  Weekend trips may include All Blacks test matches, Super Rugby fixtures etc depending on the time of the year they are here.

The academy members will play for a local school team or club, study at a local school or tertiary institution and live at a local boarding school or homestay.  Packages are structured for individual players, coaches and teams or clubs!

Currently the Hawkes Bay academy has welcomed a great group of 63 players from Academia Internacional de Rugby - New Zealand to Hawkes Bay over the recent days.  These young players are aged 13-18 years old from Chile and Argentina who have come to spend the next few weeks training with HBRU staff and Magpies players to improve their rugby skills and are staying with local host families.  We will also show them some of the great sights and experiences in Hawkes Bay to give them the best possible stay.  So if you see them out and about say hi and make them feel welcome. We look forward to more players arriving in February.

Our clubrooms and facilities as well as Tremain Field is being used as the training base for these young rugby tourists who are certainly enjoying their kiwi experience and are enthusiastic learners. They are thriving on the rugby tuition they are receiving from Ellery and his Hawkes Bay Rugby coaching team as well being hosted by local rugby families they are living with in Napier and Hastings.  The Hawkes Bay Union are really leading the way in growing the game globally……..

Above: Ellery Wilson and Mason Emerson enjoying a bit of fun with some of the
young South American academy members.  Not sure whether Ellery’s command
of the Spanish language has improved much though !

Above: Scrummaging tuition and training in the Magpies gym.

Below: Tremain Field is being well used as these young visiting players are being put through
various rugby skills and set pieces under the expert guidance Ellery and fellow members of the
Hawkes Bay Rugby Union coaching staff.

an important reminder to all players, members who received awards (trophies) at our 2018 Dinner and Presentation of Trophies function >>> If YOU are still in possession of your cup could you please return it back to the clubrooms so that it placed on display along with the others.  Either bring it along to training and give it to your coach or hand it in over the club bar.

THAT here is an update re pre-season training times and venues etc we hope to bring you more info/details as it comes to hand.  Those players in involved in Sevens training will be in the loop -

~~~ Tuesday mornings – Gym sessions – Infinite Fitness   (5am-5.45am) ~~~  Wednesday evenings – 7’s Training (5.50pm)     ~~~  Thursday evenings – Club Touch (5.50pm)
The latter two activities at Park Island.  All players, intending players and school leavers
Take this OPPORTUNITY to bring along a mate to
‘Team up with Old Boys Marist Rugby in 2019’
THAT Napier Old Boys Marist’s non-appearance at this weekends NZ Marist Rugby Federations national Sevens tournament in Hamilton was due to accommodation problems.  With Hamilton hosting the New Zealand leg of the IRB Sevens tournament for the second successive year it really put the squeeze on available beds, what with  international teams and spectators from around the globe descending on the region.  Also adding to the problem as it was the first time our champion national womens sevens had hosted to their tournament in the country which was also being played in Hamilton, the ability to fit in the NZ Marist tournament really wasn’t a goer.
Instead of a potential of up to 28 affiliate Marist clubs entering teams from around the country only six entries were received for the 2019 event.  In earlier years at the Wellington hosted event which  also clashed with the IRB tournament the big difference was a much greater range of accommodation options as well as university hostel that were vacant at this time of the year.
Ideally in future our NZ Marist tournament should give consideration to running this national event as a stand alone tournament on a date that doesn’t clash with the national international tourney.  When Hamilton Marist have had their three year tenure of the national Marist event then either Napier and or Hastings should also be given consideration to play host.  We are very accessible from around the North Island and fortunate to have great air links for South Island clubs.
Our Junior club are a great example of getting up and travelling as for the past eight years our 12 grade team (last year before high school) has flown to Christchurch over an Easter weekend and played.   These include their peers at three Marist affiliate clubs, Ashburton Celtic, Christchurch Marist Albion and Timaru Celtic as well as a game against the original club that travelled to Napier that prompted the instigation of the southern tour the Christchurch RFC.  So if these youngsters can do it the ‘big boys’ can surely travel north.  And there’s not as many of them in a sevens side either !
And for the record up in Hamilton yesterday Ardmore Marist beat Hamilton Marist in the final 19-12 to take our the 2019 NZ Marist Sevens title.
 THAT  Remember When ?  Napier Old Boys Marist captain Michael Johnson was presented with the coveted Spillane Cup by the NZ Marist Rugby Federation President Henry Clark following the successful Napier hosted tournament in 2006.
 THAT with Sevens rugby a current topic and no national tournament held in 2018 success was the order of the day for Napier Old Boys Marist at the last event played in Wellington.  The results for Napier was a double whammy which saw both our Premier and Colts teams taking out the available titles.  For the record our Premiers overcame host club Marist St Pats in a tight final by 20-17 while our younger brigade also saw off MSP Colts 14-12 in another close affair.   And from our Premier team Ricky Hayes and from the Colts Mitch Drew were selected for the 2017 NZM Sevens tournament side.
THAT if you know of anyone that is interested in joining our regular TeamTalk  mailouts  then please forward their name and email address to  -   New members and supporters of our Rugby and affiliates Marist sports club always Welcome.
"This looks a good team on paper, let's see how it looks on grass."
- English rugby scribe on England's new look against Australia.
“We want our players to be better young men at home, at school and around the community and they will play better rugby because of it.  You are not a better person because you play better rugby.  You play better rugby when you are a better person…’s a simple philosophy.”
Wise words from successful Napier Boys High successful mentor Brendon Ratcliffe who took for 1st XV side to second place in last seasons national Top Four.
The Leprechaun Comments
Mick, from Dublin, appeared on ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ and towards the end of the program had already won 500,000 euros.
“You’ve done very well so far,” said Chris Tarrant, the show’s presenter, “but for a million euros, you’ve only got one life-line left, phone a friend. Everything is riding on this question. Will you go for it?”
“Sure,” said Mick. “I’ll have a go!”
“Which of the following birds does NOT build its own nest?
a) Sparrow
b) Thrush,
c) Magpie,
d) Cuckoo?”
“I haven’t got a clue.” said Mick, ”So I’ll use last lifeline and phone my friend Paddy back home in Dublin ..”
Mick called up his mate, and told him the circumstances and repeated the question to him.
“Friggin hell, Mick!” cried Paddy. “Dat’s simple it’s a cuckoo.”
“Are you sure?”
“I’m friggin sure.”
Mick hung up the phone and told Chris, “I’ll go with cuckoo as my answer.”
“Is that your final answer?” asked Chris.
“Dat it is.”
There was a long, long pause and then the presenter screamed, “Cuckoo is the correct answer! Mick, you’ve won 1 million euros!”
The next night, Mick went round to Paddy’s to buy him a drink.
“Tell me, Paddy? How in Heaven’s name did you know it was da Cuckoo that doesn’t build its own nest?”
“Because he lives in a Friggin clock!”
A blonde got fed up with all the Blonde jokes……
So she cut her hair short and dyed it black. Bought a snazzy convertible and went driving through the countryside.
On a back country road, she drove up to a large flock of sheep that were slowly crossing the road.
As she sat there watching the flock she saw the farmer standing there.
She said “Hey I’ll bet you, if I can guess how many sheep you have in this flock, how about you give me one? “Ok,” he said, “give it a try.”
She stood in the seat and surveyed the flock and said: “You have 347 sheep!”
The farmer was amazed as he had exactly 347 sheep.
He told her to pick her one out and picked a really cute one. As she was putting it into her car.
The farmer said
“Wait a minute, how about if I can guess what colour your hair really is you give me my dog back?”
We look forward to seeing all rugby players, footballers, netballers, cricketers and softballers and friends at the clubrooms each Saturday  -  Pop in for cool Tui or two  - Also bring along your mates for an Ale and a chat.    All members and Friends Welcome ............. Ed
