Napier Old Boys Marist Premiers  41  HAVELOCK NORTH 13

How good was it to watch the boys put 40 points on the nemesis Havelock North…. A bit of a slow start for us with Havelock coming out firing and extremely hungry to knock us off our perch, as per every other team in this competition….. a fair number of simple handling mistakes saw Havelock take the lead after 10 minutes from a charged down kick to dot down.  With a successful penalty kick 6 minutes later we were 8 nil down. 2 tries to 1 in this half gave us a 14-8 lead at the break.

The 2nd half was a different story, maybe due to some wise words from Craig and Steve…. Michael Buckley was to score 3 tries in this half and with each one scored Havelock Norths  frustrations were evident with them opting for golden oldies scrums and the  number of high tackles and filth that they were dishing out, 3 yellow cards were handed out by Tipene Cotterell and it is fair to say there should of been another 3!!!    Try scorers were Michael Buckley 4, Ellery Wilson 1, Terry Marsh 1, Shae Tucker 1,  Johnny Lauano 3 conversions.

Thanks to our supporters & sponsors for getting behind us, make sure you come to Elwood Park next Saturday at 3pm to help us beat Hastings Rugby & Sports, this will be a tough encounter!!!!

Napier Old Boys Marist Premier Reserve  40  HAVELOCK NORTH 7

This week the Richard Kepka Builders Premier Reserve team were home for Club Day against Havelock North.  This Havelock team has had a couple of big wins in the last few weeks so we thought it was going to be a tough encounter.  We stuck to our game plan in the first half and were rewarded with 3 well worked tries.  The only time we were under pressure was the last 10 minutes of the half where Havelock attacked us with wave after wave of pick and goes at the line, but we held strong and kept them out.

We played some outstanding rugby in the first half taking the scoreline out to a 21 nil lead into half time.  The second half was much the same scoring 3 more tries and only conceding one to give us a final score of 40-7.   Thank you to all our supporters out there today.

Napier Old Boys Marist Colts

First game of the 2nd round, Club Day and Challenge Shield up for grabs and playing HRS who beat us convincingly last week.  We started really well sticking to our game plan and dominating the opening of the game. We scored early and had confidence.  However this is a very  good HRS side that doesn't give up. The 1st half was a real arm wrestle and ended 15 all.

The 2nd half was an even tighter battle, however our lads worked extremely well as a team kept HRS from scoring any tries and only allowed 1 penalty.  We ended the game 25 - 18 to us. A really great turn-around from last week.

Players of the day.  The Team as they all played their parts really well and it was just too hard to pick out just 3 players from what was a great team effort.  Special mention must go to Te Rima Whenuaroa who was supposed to be on a plane to Hawaii but wanted to get at least a half game which then got extended by a further 15.  Our Colts try scorers were James Mitchell, Craig Sharplin and Te Kahika Thompson. Liam Batt also had a great day with the boot converting 2 tries and 2 penalties.

Welcome to our Southern Visitors

A visiting Ashburton Celtic U11.5’s team arrived on Friday and played under lights on Bond Field in the early evening against our Ramage Sheet Metal NOBM 11 grade coached by Jason Evans.  The game was tight in first half with but NOBM took control in the second half with forwards getting to the loose ball first and putting pressure on the opposition ball carriers around the rucks.

Some superb back line play was displayed with a number of tries being scored out wide by the outside backs and the odd front rower.  The NOBM side were the eventual winners 44 – 14.   Napier’s try scorers were hooker Hale Joblin, prop Issac Allen, loose forward Sam turner 2, winger Henry Klingender, winger Alex O’Neil and fullback Corry Peterson.

Player of the Day and youngest team member with strong scrummaging and tackling Tobiuz Lowe.   Next year our team will be travelling to Ashburton to play them in the Deep South.  Of note 21 fathers accompanied the team and good feed and new friendships were made in our clubrooms afterwards.

The result of the games for the visitors against Hastings R&S  on Saturday saw the local team winning 47-25.  And at the time of on-forwarding this edition of Team Talk the result of the game which still to be played on Monday for Ashburton Celtic vs Pirates is unavailable.

A great trip for this young team many of whom had never been north of the Cook Strait before.  The trip which they fundraised for is a reversal of our own Napier Old Boys Marist 12th Grade  teams that have travelled annually on a four match tour to Canterbury  over the past seven years, where they play matches vs Christchurch Marist Albion, the Christchurch Club, Timaru Celtic and Ashburton Celtic as well as taking in many local sightseeing excursions.  Jasons Evans boys will be our next NOBM side to travel south in 2019 which is sure to be another great rugby experience for another crop of young  players and as a NZ Marist affiliated club, one that we should certainly continue well into the future.

THAT here is a 1993 Flashback with an international flavour featuring Napier Old Boys Marist Premiers captain Simon Tremain about to ground the ball for a try against the touring Lions team that sealed Hawkes Bays 29-17 victory.  In  doing so Simon joined fellow clubmates halfback Neil Weber who also scored a try and first-five Simon Kerr who kicked a drop goal, a penalty and a conversion – collectively scoring more points between them than the British & Irish Lions.

a reminder to our ‘rugby veterans’  -  Next Golden Oldies tournament - Sun 24 June hosted by Takapau.  Sun.15 July hosted by Pirates.  And Sunday 5 or 12 August host club to be announced.  So guys now is the time to get out for a jog or two – the Fun is now underway.

THAT here is another old Irish Proverb  -  If you are looking for a friend without a fault you will be without a friend forever.
THAT this pic of the foundation stone depicts how time has flown since the opening of our Park Island clubrooms at Queens Birthday weekend back in 2000.  The completion of the building of our architecturally designed facility was the Napier Old Boys Marist Rugby Clubs second biggest occasion with the other being the amalgamation of our two McLean Park based clubs in Napier High School Old Boys – (established. 1910) and Napier Marist - (established 1908) in November 1990.  Yes some 28 years have gone by since we joined forces and worked at forming a strong and well run rugby club which is now proving its worth both on and off the field.  So roll on the next twenty eight……
THAT amongst those member present at the official opening of the new clubrooms in 1990 were from left – Sir Brian Lochore who was guest speaker at the opening,  club vice President the late Sir Russell Pettigrew and former club chairman Chris Tremain.  In pic two club life member and a former Marist President Dr Tony Foley, a former Marist President Mike Richardson and club chairman and later life member Phil Beck.

THAT fellow club members extend our best wishes to Ellery Wilson, Hannon Brighouse, Ricky Hayes, Matt Gardner, Shae Tucker, Michael Buckley and Mitch Drew who lineup for the match vs Wairarapa-Bush at Featherston on Queens Birthday Monday.  Also bad luck to our NOBM Premier captain Chris Johnston who was carrying an injury when the team was announced.

THAT this weeks edition will be also posted as usual on the clubs website -  - add this link to your favourites for future reference.   Ed

The Leprechaun Comments

An Englishman, Scotsman and an Irishman are all stranded on an island. They’ve been there for years, when one day the Englishman finds a lamp buried in the sand. He starts to polish it and out pops a genie. “Oh thank you master” says the genie, “I will grant you all one wish! ”
The Englishman says…”Oh how I’d love to be at Lords sipping a Gin and Tonic, watching the cricket”
Big flash, cloud of smoke and he’s gone!
The Scotsman says…”see you Jimmy,I wish I was at Hampden Park with a few mates watching the football”.
Big flash , cloud of smoke and he’s gone!
The Irishman says “Bejesus its gonna be awful lonely here without them, can you bring them back”????

An Irishman walks into a railway station and presents himself at the ticket counter.
“I’d like a return ticket,” he says.
“Where to?”
“To here!” says the Irishman.
