NASH CUP of the Clive defenders.

WIT Trust
Napier Old Boys Marist Premiers 76  CLIVE 0

A bit of a drab day at Farndon Park to take on the Clive River Rats, perfect for both teams to play in cooler conditions though. Willie Benson lead the team on to the field in his 50th appearance and within 3 minutes into it we had 7 points on the board with Michael Buckley scoring his first of two tries for the day… We continued to score at ease during this half until Clive began an attack right on halftime but still could not crack our defence, a good show from our boys.  Halftime score was 45-0.

Clive came out firing in the 2ndspell but still our defence held strong, even with 14 men on the field after a yellow card was issued for repeated infringing Clive just couldn’t bust thru. 5 tries were scored by  NOB Marist in this half with Clive still not managing a point  -  76-0 at the final whistle.   Our try scorers were Mitch Drew 3 and 2 conversions, Michael Buckley 2, Shae Tucker 2, Ellery Wilson 2 and 1 conversion, Ricky Hayes 1, Sean Skeet 1, Liam Edwards 1 and 5 conversions.  Great to see so many supporters on the sideline, keep up the good work - Taradale next week on Tremain Field, see you all there.

Town  & Country PRATT TROPHY

Napier Old Boys Marist Premier Reserve 84  TAMATEA 5

This week the Richard Kepka Builders Premier Development team travelled to the Hastings Sports Park to take on Tamatea.  Unfortunately for the second week in a row the opposition was struggling to put a team together and the game started with them only having 12 players.   We started strong and stuck to our structure for the first twenty scoring a couple of good tries.  Our forwards carried well and the backs clinical passing made the try’s look easy.  This is about the time our discipline started to let us down.  Although we scored several more tries we let Tamatea run too much with the ball, tackled poorly and gave away far too many penalties.  With the penalty count at 16 – 2 we should have been getting thrashed ourselves, especially when we played the last 5 minutes of the half with a man in the bin. The big positive from the half was Thomas scoring a hattrick on the wing on his return from Aussie.

The second half started better than the first had finished.  We held possession again scored several more well-constructed tries and we stuck to the game plan and only conceded 5 penalties in the half although another yellow card was not ideal.  There were a few patches where we went quiet and Tamatea who by this stage had 15 on the field, played well and came close to our line, but we defended this well and held them out. Final score 84-5

It was good to have such a dominant win again, 14 tries in total just like last week, but a much-improved performance.

Napier Old Boys / Texan Doolans Thirds 5  FLAXMERE 25

Napier Old Boys Texan Doolans lost 25-5 against Flaxmere down at home ground 2, Whitmore Park.  8 OBM players, playing in their club shorts and socks and a bunch of Texans made up the team. We should have a few more OBM players in 2 weeks when we play on home ground 1, Park Island. The team is starting to take shape and there is good spirit in the team. We just need a win now.. Keep up the good work lads.

ARTHUR BROWN CUP

 Napier Old Boys Marist Colts
49  HAVELOCK NORTH COLTS  7

We didn’t have any preseason games so today was always going to be interesting. The ground was in great condition for open fast rugby.
 HN kicked off and got a yellow card in the first play. Their second card came shortly after and by half time they had 3 players in the bin for foul play. This didn’t phase our lads who played some superb open running rugby. The forwards set the platform for our backs to run rampant. Sonny Korosigsiga and Craig Sharplin both had strong games and showed why they are knocking on the door of the Prems team.  By half time we had a commanding lead 37-0  lead.

The 2nd half was much more of an arm wrestle with both  teams struggling with their 1st competition game. The Havelock team got an intercept try when we were trying to run the ball from deep in our 22. But other than that they never threatened the try line.  Our defence was strong but fitness was weak and we ended the game with a 49 - 7 win. We have a lot to work on in the next few weeks, but nothing training can’t fix. A great first game for many new players so it was very hard to pick players of the day.

Our try scorers were 3 Craig Sharplin, 2 Sonny Korosigasiga, 1 Sam Smithers, Dylan Mair, Paul Lapa.  Liam Batt converted 1 try and James Mitchell converted 2 tries and kicked a penalty.

DID YOU KNOW

THAT in tidying up my PC Inbox came across an interesting Flashback from 2013  -  And where are they today?  Well we all know Johnny is a valued member and goal kicker of our WIT Trust OBM Premier side and who has just been selected in the wider Hawkes Bay training squad, while Patrick has just returned from touring in South Africa with the Napier Boys High 1st XV where they attended the World Schools Rugby Festival in Paarl.

For the record the NZ Marist Rugby Federation games below saw the Marist Senior XV go down to the NZRU Heartland XV 25-12, while in the schoolboys curtainraiser North overwhelmed South by 74-5.  Napier OB Marist’s 12th grade representative flanker Patrick Teddy scored two tries in the match for the Northern team which was coached by his dad Paul Teddy.

And of the photo of 2013 photo of Patrick Teddy scoring in the 112th Ross Shield tournament at Waipukurau, the TeamTalk headline read ‘The Ross Shield is Napier’s Shield’ as the team were unbeaten at the tournament with wins v Dannevirke 50-3,  Central 63-0,  Hastings West 29-7,  Wairoa 68-0 and Hastings West 27-12.  Seven NOBM Juniors were selected in the Hawkes Bay Ross Shield XV – Manaaki Aranui, Kegan Christian-Goss, Tanielu Ta’a, Patrick Teddy, Leo Thompson, Tyrone Thompson and Kurtis Weeks.

* A footnote to the pic below Johnny suffered a shoulder injury in yesterdays 76-0 Premier win over Clive so his ‘green machine’ team mates and our supporters wish him well for a speedy recovery.

THAT up to this weekends round of Super Rugby games did you realise that the four Australian franchises had suffered no less than 33 consecutive defeats at the hands of their kiwi opponents.

 THAT  we hear that our dashing and high try scoring former Premier team No.8 Joseph Penitito is on the move again, the latest we’ve heard is that he has signed with the professional French club Bairritz Olympque RFC, also just signed for the same club is former Napier OBM back Tyrone Elkington-MacDonald who has been playing in Auckland over the past couple of seasons.  It will be interesting come the kick-off of the next northern hemisphere season to follow their progress.  Meanwhile Joseph has indicated that he is keen to get back and make some appearances with his mates in the ‘Green Machine’ when his current northern hemisphere season commitments are completed

THAT here is another old Irish Proverb  -  “Be sure to taste your words before you spit them out.”

THAT our Super Supporter Paul McGettigan is at it again with this pic of an obviously rural property No. with his NOBM club scarf draped around it after the Premiers 76-0 result over Clive and the 38th consecutive win.  Over recent  games as our Prems wins that have continued to accumulate from both Nash Cup and Maddison Trophy games, McGoo has sourced an appropriate address No. decorated, usually the letterbox in club colours and posted the pic on Facebook.  And what about his quip following yesterday final whistle; How ironic that today's score vs Clive was 76....exactly 2 x 38 !

THAT we remind to Make Sure your Subs that are due as from 1st April are paid so you can maintain your members rates when making over the club bar as well as club merchandise purchases.    As in the past we look forward to and appreciate your valued and continued support of our top performing Club again in 2018.

THAT a reminder to our readers – If  YOU would like to contribute or offer your comments re rugby in general or our Club, then send a ‘Letter to the Editor’.   Please feel free to email your contributions - we look forward to your comments and thoughts.  Don’t bottle it up or tell someone else contact TeamTalk today.

THAT this weeks edition will be also posted as usual on the clubs website -  www.napierobmaristrugby.co.nz  - add this link to your favourites for future reference.   Ed

THEY SAID IT

“It’s only a graze on my knee. I’ll be back in a couple of weeks.”
Mr Optimism Hurricanes TJ Perenara tells his coach after rupturing his medial cruciate ligament which will be a lot more than just a couple of weeks to recuperate from.

There is far too much talk about good ball and bad ball. In my opinion, good ball is when you have possession and bad ball is when the opposition have it.”
Former British & Irish Lion Dick Jeeps.

"The French are predictably unpredictable."
Andrew Mehrtens.

"I've seen a lot people like him, but they weren't playing on the wing."
Colin Meads on Jonah Lomu.

The Leprechaun Comments

Mick, from Dublin , appeared on 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire' and towards the end of the program had already won 500,000 euros.

"You've done very well so far," said Chris Tarrant, the show's presenter, "but for a million euros you've only got one life-line left, phone a friend.  Everything is riding on this question. Will you go for it?"

"Sure," said Mick. "I'll have a go!"

"Which of the following birds does NOT build its own nest?

  1. a) Sparrow

  2. b) Thrush

  3. c) Magpie

  4. d) Cuckoo?"

    "I haven't got a clue," said Mick, ''so I'll use my last lifeline and phone my friend Paddy back home in Dublin ."

    Mick called up his mate, and told him the circumstances and repeated the question to him.

    "Hell, Mick!" cried Paddy. "Dat's simple. It's a cuckoo."
    "Are you sure?"

    "Of course I'm sure."
    Mick hung up the phone and told Chris, "I'll go with cuckoo as my answer."

    "Is that your final answer?" asked Chris.

    "Dat it is."

    There was a long, long pause and then the presenter screamed, "Cuckoo is the correct answer! Mick, you've won 1 million euros!" The next night, Mick invited Paddy to their local pub to buy him a drink.

    "Tell me, Paddy? How in Heaven's name did you know it was da Cuckoo that doesn't build its own nest?"

"Because everyone knows he lives in a clock!"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Irishman rushed into a barber's shop with a pig under his arm.
"Where did you get that?" asked the barber.
"I won him in a raffle," said the pig.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"Tell me, Patrick, how did you manage to get so very drunk last night?" asked the parish priest.

"Well you see, Father, it was like this. I got into very bad company after winning a bottle of whiskey at a raffle."

"But you were with Mick Mulligan, Sean O'Toole, and Peter Ryan and they don't drink."

"Dat's what I mean, Father..."
