Napier Old Boys Marist Premiers 74  CENTRAL SPORTS  5

Sun, Wind, Rain, Only thing missing was snow…. describes Central Hawkes Bay to a T….. It only took 5 minutes after kick off for us to dot down….CHB came back 4 minutes later with a try of their own, this was to be their only try in this match but fair to say and I think we all agree it was not pretty rugby to watch and some not so good handling skills and poor decisions were prevalent in the 1st half.  4 tries were scored in this half securing a 22-5 halftime lead.  Some pretty stern words were issued during the break and the level of entertaining rugby in the 2nd half was certainly 100% better.   Central never had a chance in the next 40 minutes with us running in 8 tries to win the game 74-5.

Try scorers were Michael Buckley 4, Shae Tucker 2, Mitch Drew 1, Sami Lauano 1, Terry Marsh 1, Hannon Brighouse 1, Johnny Lauano 2 & 7 conversions.   A big thankyou to the supporters who made the trip down south, was great to see you all, keep up the good work.   We take on Clive at Farndon Park next Saturday 3pm, see you all there.

Town  & Country PRATT TROPHY

Richard Kepka Builders
Napier Old Boys Marist Premier Reserve  88  AOTEA  10

This week the Richard Kepka Premier Development team were at home to Aotea. This is always one of the toughest games of the year for us and we weren’t expecting anything less today. Unfortunately for Aotea, a family emergency took several of their players out of the game.  With Aotea struggling to get a full team together the start of play was pushed back to 3pm.

We started strong controlling the tempo of the game and keeping our structure scoring 3 times within the first 15 minutes. As we gained confidence we lost our composure and a poor pass allowed Aotea to score out wide. After this we went back to the game plan and scored several more tries in the half for a 57 – 5 lead.

The second half started poorly, we played into Aotea’s hand by throwing the ball around too much like a touch game. We knew we had the better of them but didn’t play smart rugby and although we managed to score early on we let Aotea control the ball. This eventually allowed them to score out wide again. We made some player changes and slowly went back to our game plan. The final 20 minutes saw us scoring freely again and we pushed the score out to a result of 88 – 10.  It was a game of two halves today, but it was good to have such a dominant win. 14 tries in total with TeKahika scoring 3 and James and George both getting doubles.  We still have lots to work on, but the signs look good when we stick to the plan and play our own game.

Thanks again must go to the Colts lads that helped today, their efforts out there are much appreciated.  It was also good to see club development director Matt Wyatt throw the boots on and jump in the mid field, although I still think he’s better at prop.  And lastly thanks to our Sponsor Richard Kepka for his side-line support and the cold ones after the game.

Napier Old Boys / Texan Doolans Thirds 14  HAVELOCK NORTH 32

Lost 32-14 against Havelock  but good to get a team out there.  NOBM fielded six players in the combined side for our first outing together, playing in their club shorts and socks and a bunch of Texans made up the remainder of the team.  We should have a few more OBM players on deck next week next week, but the team played well right to the end and has the makings of a strong side as the season progresses.  The club is grateful to you all for making the effort so we can have another OBM team playing.   Keep up the good work lads.

just two years into the clubs ‘new life’ at our new clubrooms at Park Islandthe celebrations are under way following the winning of the 2001 Maddison Trophy with team members, captain Glen Varcoe and Mick Dennehy sporting their winners medals and coaches Pat Benson and Peter O’Shaughnessy.  Winning Hawkes Bays premier trophy was certainly the climax to a season that saw the team runners-up in the Hastings hosted Spillane tournament and then into the club season.  The NOBM team progressed through to the Nash Cup final and an embarrassing 62-0 rugby loss to Havelock North lesson.  That was tough.  The Old Boys Marist team won their way through the round robin play stumbling once again only to Havelock North 22-27.  The semi was  a 24-13 win against Taradale and a ticket into the 2001 Maddison Final.

And in the words of the clubs Director of Rugby Bill Reilly; ‘It was to be a day of club history in the making for the underdogs.  Played before a crowd in excess of 2000 at HBRU headquarters and having let our Havelock opponents in for an early try was it going to be déjà vu for the ’greens’.  Absolutely not.  The guys had been through the school of hard knocks in our earlier final and weren’t going to be the whipping boys again.  Under inspirational captain Glen Varcoe they stuck to their game plan and were in front 15-10 at the break helped by spot throw-ins by Howard Murray to his lineout exponent team mates Reece Robinson, Paul Mitchell and Michael Johnson - plus a solid scrum, providing quality ball to a slick backline.’

The game intensified in the final forty to the extent the Old Boys Marist had to charge down two drop goals attempts in the closing minutes   to avert a reversal of the result.  But despite the heat really being turned up by the ‘villagers’ they were still on top of the opposition when it counted – the Final Whistle.

O’Flaherty’s Napier Old Boys Marist 22  Progressive Meats Havelock North 21
And for the record OBM  tries to Reece Robinson, Andrew Urquhart, Glen Varcoe, Tim Manawatu 2 conversions 1 penalty.  Havelock North  2 tries, 3 penalties, 1 conversion.
And what a weekend of partying followed !!!

THAT  good to see enthusiastic supporter of the ‘green machine’ none other than ‘McGoo’ featuring in the local press this week and making a  race-walking comeback after timeout.  The former national 3000m champion in his 40-plus category and a runner-up in the Oceania Masters 5km and 10 km at his peak. After his lengthy spell away from the sport he has come back hungrier than ever and at 61 is now targeting more Masters events.   Paul ‘McGoo’ McGettigan who has in the past contributed his ‘Here & There’ sporting  oriented column in Team Talk.

And being a man of many talents he is also the electronic McLean Park scoreboard operator on matchdays, with the most recent being last Friday evenings Hurricanes – Sharks clash where he chalked up his 352th match for the HBRU. And what an outcome with the scoreline reading Hurricanes 38 Sharks 37 at the end of extra time with the clock showing 86min 37 secs of running time.

THAT here is another old Irish Proverb  -  ‘May the hinges of our friendship never grow rusty.’
THAT isn’t a bit of a storm in a teacup with regards a SANZAAR spokesman commenting on the state of the surface at McLean Park in the run up to last Friday evenings Hurricanes-Sharks encounter. “We’re not happy with the field to be honest. It was reported to us in the week the field had a few issues.” said spokesman Greg Thomas.  “From a playing perspective there are no player welfare issues, we’ve had both teams and referee inspect the field and the game will go ahead.”  So what’s the problem Mr Thomas ?

Sure there has been a recent Central Districts cricket match played on the surface and maybe the grass on the block may be a bit short with a couple of minor bald patches but with watering recent inspections showed the field was soft enough to play.  So let the game commence.

“The groundsman and the council have given us their assurances that it’ll be fine.  As far as we’re concerned the referee’s have signed it off….and both teams are happy to play..”
A Hurricanes spokesman gives McLean Park the thumbs up  -  game on.

“I got the name Mcgoo when I bought a raffle ticket and put my the name McGoo on the butt. I won the raffle and the name has stuck.”
Rugby enthusiast Paul McGettigan explains how his nickname came about.

"Whether it's a loss or a previous win, we're just looking to get better each week."

The Leprechaun Comments

"Young man," said the judge, looking sternly at the defendant. "It's alcohol and alcohol alone that's responsible for your present sorry state!"
"I'm glad to hear you say that," replied Murphy, with a sigh of relief. "Everybody else says it's all my fault!"

A large multinational head office was based in Dublin. The new American CEO was not impressed with the productivity of the Irish staff and decided fire all the slackers. A few days after he fired the majority of the staff, he came into to the office and found a man leaning on his desk doing nothing.
The CEO walks up to the guy and asks "what are you doing?!"
The guy says "I'm waiting to get paid".
The CEO says "Okay, how much do you get paid in a week?"
The guys thinks for a second then answers "About 300Euro."
The CEO takes out his wallet, gives the guy Eur1200, and says "Now go away and never come back." The guys walks away.
The CEO turns to the rest of the office and shouts "Will somebody please tell me who the hell I have just fired?"
An employee shouts back "You just tipped the pizza guy 1200Euro."

O’Flaherty phoned the maternity ward at the hospital. "Quick!" He said. "Send an ambulance, my wife is goin' to have a baby!"
Tell me, is this her first baby?" the medic asked.
"No, this is her husband, Kevin, speakin'."
