More Pre-season Action Yesterday

Summer like conditions greeted both teams in the annual preseason fixture against Palmerston North Old Boys Marist.  With the Rebbo Cup on the line the lads were keen to continue on their winning way and after a messy start the tries started to flow with the lads outscoring the visitors 4 tries to 1 to take a 26-7 lead into the first quarter. The second quarter was a lot more tighter as PNOBM muscled up in defence and metres where hard to come by. A try a piece was the only scoring in the 2nd quarter.

The 3rd quarter was dominated by PNOBM as they held the hard for long periods however our lads ability to score long range tries enabled the score board to keep ticking over and keep the lead intact.

43 -26 with 20 to go and PNOBM dominated the early stages of the final quarter running in a try however the lads quickly adjusted and finished strong to score 4 tries to close out an entertaining game 65-38.

A special mention must go to the forwards, who in the second hit out of the year, the majority of them had to play 80 minutes as the injured list meant there were only 2 reserves which was quickly reduced to one when a calf muscle was blown in the warm up.

Next week the attention turns to defending the Spillane Cup in Auckland. Game one is v Auckland Marist with kick off at 6.30pm on Friday evening. Follow the Facebook page for the result.

Report courtesy Tim Jones

In a second match on the Tremain Field No.2 a composite Development/Colts team played out another evenly contested hitout against a Maranenui team who stepped in to fill in following the withdrawl of the Palmerston North OBM Colts team that unfortunately pulled out of travelling to Napier for a game. Our Napier OBM XV came out on top on the day 26-12 in most of the guys first outing for the season.  Bet those ‘cold Tuis’ tasted great after that effort !

You never score a try without getting a pass from someone else

Now let the another challenge begin…..

Flashback: The scene from August 5, 2017 and new the journey all begins again in 20 days time……

>>> Remember Guys you’re a long time with your boots hung up when you finally blow the whistle…
How about giving it one more go….

Hey Div 3
players and prospective players we would like to see you along for a run at your own pace at our pre-season training.  Get into condition with a bit of touch rugby and get the feel of a ball in your hands once again.

Our ‘Thirsty Thirds’ have been a big part of our Old Boys Marist Rugby over the years and we’re really keen to see that continue in the coming 2018 season.

As we know you guys have more than likely played a lot of rugby over the years and many of you have had plenty of experience at all levels and most likely would like to ease off but to still play BUT at your own pace.

So how about it pass the word around your mates, former team mates, workmates and friends and get them to get along to Park Island on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

IMPORTANT: Depending on numbers we get at early training will confirm if we register a team for 2018 – so guys put the word around.
And how about a couple of you young fellas getting together and having a crack at coaching these likely lads who have probably played a fair bit of rugger over the years and should just about know it all anyway.  Put the word around   -   Have a chat to Matt soonest.
For further Info please make the effort to get in touch with director of Rugby Development Matt Wyatt – 0226 105 118  or  Alan Gardiner – 0272 458 700

++++  A Club that forgets its past has no future.

“With a running scoreline featuring on the teams facebook throughout the match the final wrap was a classic !  ‘We may be out by 2 points. Depending if the first conversion was made. Although that 2 points difference is still longer in minutes than Sean Skeet lasted on the field !”
Excerpt from the running scoreline featuring on the Prem teams facebook throughout the match vs Palmerston North OBM yesterday and the final wrap was a classic

“That’s probably the worst performance in four years – or three and a bit years – that I’ve been involved with the Hurricanes.”
The Canes 19-21 loss to the Bulls in their opening super game had coach Chris Boyd spewing.

“In the period of time that I’ve been coaching, I don’t think I’ve ever been involved in a game where we prepared so well and delivered so little.”
Boyd continues.

“Once I became an All Black, I thought I’d never ever want to let this go.”

71 cap veteran All Black prop Wyatt Crockett.

“It is teenagers sometimes 15 year olds, being approached about signing by clubs in both union and league. That’s scary.”
NZRU boss Steve Tew on the increasing number of agents and overseas clubs chasing signatures from up and coming talented young rugby players.

Leprechaun Comments

My Paddy O’Shea and his wife Bridgette were walking past a swanky new restaurant last night.
“Did you smell that food?” Bridgette asked. “Incredible!”
Being the nice guy Paddy was, he thought, “What the heck, I’ll treat her!”
So they walked past it again………

Paddy Irishman, an Englishman and a Scotsman were doing construction work on scaffolding on the 20th floor of a building.

They were eating lunch and Paddy Irishman said, "Corned beef and cabbage! If I get corned beef and cabbage one more time for lunch I'm going to jump off this building."

The Englishman opened his lunch box and exclaimed, "Ham and English mustard again! If I get ham and mustard one more time I'm going to jump off, too."

Then the Scotsman opened his lunch and said, "Haggis again. If I get a haggis sandwich one more time I'm jumping too."

Next day Paddy Irishman opens his lunch box, sees corned beef and cabbage and jumps to his death.

The Englishman opens his lunch, sees ham and English mustard and jumps too.

And the Scotsman opens his lunch, sees the haggis and jumps to his death also.

At the funeral the Englishman’s wife is weeping. She says, "If I'd known how really tired he was of ham and mustard I never would have given it to him again!

And the Scotsman’s wife also weeps and says, "I could have given him cheese! I didn't realise he hated haggis so much."

Everyone turned and stared at Paddy Irishman’s wife. "Hey, don't look at me" she said. "He makes his own lunch.”

Billy stops Paddy in Dublin and asks for the quickest way to Cork.

Paddy says, "Are you on foot or in the car?"

Billy says, "In the car."

Paddy says, "That's the quickest way."

We look forward to seeing all rugby players, footballers, netballers, cricketers and softballers and friends at the clubrooms each Saturday  -  Pop in for cool Tui or two  - Also bring along your mates for an Ale and a chat.    All members and Friends Welcome
