“Team up with a Winning Club in 2017
Napier Old Boys Marist

Leader of the Champions for 2017

                                                                                                                   Presidents Thanks 2017

             Phil Beck

Well the curtain has finally come down on the playing season for 2017 and what a year it has been for us all. Without doubt it has been the most successful one in the history of our Club. Even better than 2016!! Just look at all the trophies we have won for our “on the field” playing performances – including winning the Black and White Shield for the third year in succession for being the best performing rugby club in Hawkes Bay.

I wish to sincerely thank all players, coaches , managers, physios and team support staff for your efforts over the season. It has truly been a remarkable one and your contributions have been massive .

I would like to pay a special tribute to our Premier Team for your incredibly successful record in 2017. Unbeaten throughout the year, winning every trophy you contested and playing expansive and attractive rugby. Our supporters loved your amazing team spirit and the obvious enjoyment you all displayed both on and off the field.

There have been many highlights for me personally but seeing our Premier ‘flagship’ team win the coveted Maddison Trophy for the second consecutive year was fantastic and confirms that we were ‘simply the best’.

Thank you all for some great memories.

Phil Beck

THAT the ‘big three’ chairman Terry Gittings, winning captain Chris Johnston and ‘the’ coach Craig Gowler share in the rewards of their victory as they sup from the Maddison Trophy Cup last Sunday  -  who knows they could be plotting another sortie…….

THAT  we extend our best wishes to our two representatives in the 2017 New Zealand Marist Colts team who leave next Friday to participate in a four match tour of the Bay of Plenty – Waikato regions this year.  Our two players are both current premiers flanker Jack Nelson-Murry and winger Craig Sharplin.  We wish them all the best their tour and the chance to rub shoulders with affiliate Marist club players in the annual tour which is now in its 43 year and commenced back 1994.

And some more Flashbacks -  Former NZM Colts include last years 2016 Premier hooker Logan Ede  was selected.  Others who are still involved with our club directly or indirectly include in 1983 Glen Donaldson – father of Zach,  1986 Todd Donaldson (Premier management team), 1998 Jamie Beale (club director), 2004 Ross Clements (Premier Reserves),  2011 Jarvy Aoake (needs no introduction), Kurt Chambers (current coach Premier Reserves),  2014 Logan Donaldson (son of Todd).   And one other who is now unlikely to keep up the family tradition is current our Premier halfback Zach Donaldson who has only recently been elevated directly in to the Magpie squad.
THAT it is certainly rotten luck for Hawkes Bays Premier Rugby’s 2017 MVP Matt Gardner who was last week selected for the Hawkes Bay Magpies after a stellar Maddison Trophy winning season has re-injured the same arm again in what was first thought to be another break.  This latest season bad arm injury occurred in the pre-Mitre10 Cup match against the Manawatu Turbos on Friday night in Palmerston North and the same match and venue as his season ending 2016 mishap.

judging by the weekend and recent roundup of Hawkes Bays representative rugby results across the teams there’s plenty of ‘work-ons’ for all outfits to get stuck into especially if they want to get on the right side of the ledger from now on in.  I’m sure all Hawkes Bay rugby followers look forward to something better in the coming months.

the results of the Final draw last night at the clubrooms in the Clubs annual major fundraiser our ‘200 Club’ which has been in existence since the early days of our amalagamation in 1990 was popular indeed.  This was especially so with our playing and regular active membership.   The ‘lucky’ recipients who picked up the trip  >  air fares – accommodation and ticketing to  the upcoming Rugby Championship clash between old rivals the All Blacks vs Springboks were our clubs popular ‘canteen team’ of   professional chefs  Rick & Sue Anderson.

This duo has been  running  the operation at our clubrooms for a number of seasons now as well turning on a great variety of Thursday night ‘roast specials’.  This is a god send for our players and flatters as well as growing  number of supporters who can put aside  cooking dinner and come over  to the Club for and Ale or two and great cooked meal.   Congrats Rick & Sue -  enjoy your upcoming weekend away.

mark up the date on your calendar >>> Friday 18 August for the our Clubs annual Dinner & Presentation of Trophies function  -  Tickets now on Sale from the Club Bar or Bill Halpin – be in quick as numbers are limited.

THAT Members don’t forget to keep up with the Club happening on FACEBOOK.  Also this weeks edition will be posted as usual on the Clubs website –

THAT and a note to our long suffering readers  –  Apologies for any errors or mistakes in this edition  -  it’s always been a big weekend.     Ed

++++  The strength of the team is the strength of our leader.’

“I told the Club I would give them four years and I’ve done that.  The boys might be sick of my old war stories.”
Winning Premier coach Craig Gowler.

“I’m just happy  for the boys and their families. There has been massive commitment from so many since October last year in our quest to retain the Nash Cup, the Hawkes Bay Challenge Shield and the Maddison.”
Coach Craig continues.

Mary accompanied her husband, Paddy, to the doctor's office. After his checkup, the doctor called Mary into his office alone.
He said, "Your husband is suffering from a very severe stress disorder. If you don't do the following, your husband will surely die." "Each morning, fix him a healthy breakfast. Be pleasant at all times. For lunch make him a nutritious meal. For dinner prepare an especially nice meal for him. Don't burden him with chores.
Don't discuss your problems with him, it will only make his stress worse. And most importantly, no nagging. If you can do this for the next 10 months to a year, I think Paddy will regain his health completely."

On the way home, Paddy asked Mary. "What did the doctor say?"

"He said you're going to die," she replied.

I met a man the other day named Flanagan and I said, 'You're a happy man.'
He said, 'I am.'

I said, 'Why?'

'Well,' he said, 'the Income Tax people have been after me for 20 years, driving me mad, to get money out of me, driving me crazy with worry. But, this morning I got a letter from them and it said: FINAL NOTICE.'

'Thank God,' he said, 'I won't be hearing from them again.'

"Young man," said the judge, looking sternly at the defendant. "It's alcohol and alcohol alone that's responsible for your present sorry state!"
"I'm glad to hear you say that," replied Murphy, with a sigh of relief. "Everybody else says it's all my fault!"
