Napier Old Boys Marist Premier Reserves 14  HAVELOCK NORTH  26

With lots of club celebrations still be to be done, its short and sweet this week.  Firstly on behalf  of the boys a massive thank you to all our supporters who turned out week in week whatever the weather-to support the team - it never goes unnoticed and your support yesterday was awesome and meant a lot to the boys  -  A huge congratulations to the Premier boys on claiming back to back Maddison titles and an unbeaten season – a sterling effort and it has  been a pleasure to watch the boys all season.

On our game, it was one where the boys didn’t take their opportunities and Taradale did,  as there was little between the two sides but the two tries just before half time allowed the dale to take the lead and build on it in the 2nd half.  Prior to that the boys were in control and scored 2 tries after long periods of attack.  The Taradale tries were soft as they broke out from inside there half and won the race to the loose ball after Taradale’s fullback kicked ahead.   In the second half it was Taradale’s turn to dominate and while the boys defence held strong it was only a matter of time before the line was breached.   With 15 minutes remaining the boys had a sustained period on attack however Taradales line couldn’t be breached and pegging back the score line became a bridge to far.   So a disappointing end to a good season – but roll on 2018.

Taradale 26 -  Richard Kepka NOBM Premier Development 14 - Asa Eneliko, penalty try, Lucas Baistrocchi 2 conversions.

Pat Ryan Memorial Trophy – Semi Final
Napier Old Boys Marist Colts 22 ONGA TIKO 23
Belated Report from last week:

On Saturday we knew we had to win and we are in the final- lose and the season was over.  We kicked-off with a strong southerly wind in the first half at Tremain Field last Saturday.  The game started with Onga Tiko having possession and on attack however our defence was well up to it and great tackle man on man tackle from Sonny Korosigasiga  saw him rip the ball and sprint the length of the field to score under the posts. Liam batt converted to give us an early 7 nil lead.

We attacked again and this time saw Josh making a break from our 10 metre line and he weaved and stepped players and was finally caught short, our support got there and Sam Smithers scored a great team try.  Liam again converted to make it 14-0 in front.  We continued to dominate possession and we were rewarded with a penalty which Liam batt slotted from 40 metres out after missing one from a similar spot just minutes earlier - 17-0.   With 27 minutes gone in the first half Onga Tiko starved us of possession and we started falling off tackles.  They Onga Tiko then scored two tries wide out to make the halftime score 17-10 to Napier.

We knew the 2nd half was going to be tough into the wind and we started well and got in behind their defence and the forwards pushed closer and closer and finally Mark Huata scored a try to make it 22-10.   Onga Tiko came back aided by the tail wind to score a couple of long range penalty kicks from around halfway 22-16.

With 4 minutes on the clock to go they were awarded another penalty on their 10 meter line and they looked to kick to touch however then tapped and ran it they were caught 15 meters short from there they broke our defence to score under the posts for an easy conversion.  Final score 23-22

The boys were shattered and very disappointed it was a hard pill to swallow but that’s sport and in finals footy you need to front with 110% for 81 mins.   Disappointing final result aside it’s been a great season with only 2 losses.  The coaching team would like to wish the boys all the best in the future and we look forward seeing the guys in the mighty Old Boys Marist colors next year again.

THAT we continue our FLASHBACK of snippets of 1987 with a couple of pics from 30 years ago of the Gisborne Marist hosted  56th Spillane Tournament played at Rugby Park, Gisborne.  Above is Marist Premiers captain Brent Nelson following the coveted trophy presentation at the tournament aftermatch on Easter Monday.  And below is the winning team who convincingly beat Hutt Marist 38-4 to take out the Spillane Cup in the Final having beaten Marist St Pats 18-13 on the Saturday (thanks to Matt Coopers 6 penalties!).  Below is the winning Napier Marist team from which Napier’s Matt Cooper,  Craig Ferris,  John Bird and Pat Benson were selected for the 1987 Tournament XV.

THAT judging from another  FLASHBACK of 70 years ago, the 1947 programme from the Spillane Tournament dancing was almost as important as the rugby at the annual event hosted by Palmerston North Marist.  The Easter Saturday night featured a tournament dance at the PDC ballroom and again following the Easter Monday final the Spillane Ball and Presentation of Trophies was also held at the same venue.  Obviously visiting teams must have planned for an extra-long Easter weekend and not heading homeward until the Tuesday.  Those were the days……

THAT  those of you who made it yesterdays Final would have been pleased at the end of the eighty to hear that final whistle as it was a real typical tight encounter played in fine cool conditions at McLean Park.  Certainly unlike the Prem teams 2016 winning final which saw the match against old rivals the maroons played in really wet weather with plenty of surface water which saw anyone hitting the deck or diving to score send up sheets of spray – quite spectacular actually just like the scoreboard was at the end with a 41-8 winning margin.

The leadup during the week especially courtesy of social media and facebook that among other things featured a number of our junior teams who were gathered for their team photos each turning on  message and chanting in support of our two teams the Premiers and Premier Reserves who were to play in their respective Finals.  Also there was a great turnout of juniors in club colours who paraded with banners at the game yesterday which was really appreciated by our winning team.  And thanks also to a group of our juniors who performed their haka in front of our winning premiers after the trophy presentation.  Your efforts were really appreciated boys and coaches and your own opportunity may be there in the future if you stick with your club after leaving school and make our Premier side and go to play a or in a number of Maddison Trophy Finals  >

Paddy took his son out for his first pint. Off they went to their local pub only two blocks from their house.
Paddy got him a Guinness. He didn't like it, so he drank it himself. Next Paddy got him a Kilkenny, he didn't like that either, so Paddy drank that too.
Finally, he thought he might like some Harp Lager? His son spat it out. So Paddy drank it. Then Paddy tought hmmm, maybe he'd like whiskey better dan beer - so we tried a Jameson's! Nope! In desperation, Paddy asked the barman for some rare Redbreast, Ireland's finest. He wouldn't even smell it.
What could Paddy do but drink it! By the time he realized that his son just didn't like the drink, he was so fechin' drunk he could hardly push his stroller back home.

A large multinational head office was based in Dublin. The new American CEO was not impressed with the productivity of the Irish staff and decided fire all the slackers. A few days after he fired the majority of the staff, he came into to the office and found a man leaning on his desk doing nothing.
The CEO walks up to the guy and asks "what are you doing?!"
The guy says "I'm waiting to get paid".
The CEO says "Okay, how much do you get paid in a week?"
The guys thinks for a second then answers "About Eur300."
The CEO takes out his wallet, gives the guy Eur1200, and says "Now go away and never come back." The guys walks away.
The CEO turns to the rest of the office and shouts "Will somebody please tell me who the hell I have just fired?"
An employee shouts back "You just tipped the pizza guy Eur1200."
