club noticeboard

Important reminder to our coaches and managers also to our Marist Football affiliates an important Training session will be conducted at the clubrooms on the use of our new AED defibrillator on  Monday 27 March  at  6pm.

We know how many lives are lost to cardiac arrests a year. We also know of two incidents over the past couple of years where our members suffered and cardiac event, one of which turned out to be fatal.  So having a defribillator available the better chance there is of saving a life.

Scary fact: the number of people who die from sudden cardiac arrest in NZ is three times greater than the national road toll.

Owning an AED is a clear display that Napier Old Boys Marist are taking due care of our members and guests, doing what we can to provide a safe environment for them.

NEXT SATURDAY MORNING – 18 March8am kick-off.  To get our Clubrooms and surrounds up to scratch  for the new winter season we are holding WORKING BEE  -  All Members are asked to come along and lend us an hour or two.  You know the old saying ‘many hands’.

THAT  2017 has certainly been Napier OBM’s  year in NZ Marist rugby to date.  What with winning the annual NZM Sevens tournament in Wellington in late January and now taking out the coveted Spillane Cup at the 86th annual tournament in Palmerston North today certainly wraps a purple patch for the boys from Tremain Field.
All in all a real credit to Team and the coaching teams of Craig Gowler and Steve Bennett with the 15’s and
Ellery Wilson, Sam Weber and Matt Wyatt with Sevens.

THAT  you can  ‘Jump the Gun’ and get your Subs or Gold Card  and also your ‘200 Club’ paid early.  Your early club subscription payments will see you financial right through until 31 March 2018.      Stay in the Ball with Old Boys Marist in 2017.

THAT we extend a warm welcome to Lucas Baistrocchi who hails from America. Lucas who played two spells in last weeks game for the HBi Insurance Brokers Premier squad against MAC is an inside back last week and this weekend he has been to Palmie had his first taste of Spillane Cup rugby with his new clubmates.  Lucas plays for the USA South Panthers.

THAT just thought I’d drop in a Flashback from the September edition of TeamTalk in 1972 from the ‘Odds & Ends’ column. ‘Guess who was the Senior Reserve fullback last seen chained to a goalpost in McLean Park, covered in Tomato Sauce at 4am in the morning?  Moral of the story is – don’t invite a rugby team to your next ‘Stag Party’…………….  Those were the days.

++++  If winning isn’t everything why do they keep the score ?

"We got a lot of intensity in our trainings. Obviously the last two games haven't been massively physical and forward-dominated, but at the same time there's enough of an edge within the forward pack at training that we get enough of that."

Hurricanes lock Mark Abbott in the lead up to Friday's a super game against the Chiefs.

“Eddie shoots from the hip and watches where the shrapnel lands and so does Trump.  Trump divides opinion, goes on and on, while Jones is universally popular. Eddie was a maths teacher. He’s intelligent and he’s good for rugby.”
Scottish and Lions great Jim Telfer sums up Englands coach.

“He’s a Kiwi but the first thing he did was work out what makes Scotland tick. He should be staying until the World Cup. He’s got Scotland to the stage where they’re not a laughing stock. They have respect from the opposition and he’s giving the country hope.”
Telfer on Scotlands mentor Vern Cotter.

“New Players Welcome to Team up with us for the 2016/17 season

Did You Know ?
The Marist Softball Club has been around for a while and this season is the clubs 49th year
 -  and the big 50 will be in 2018 !
The Marist Club was founded by Steve Glasspole (Hutt Marist Softball) along with a number of other softball friends from the Hutt Valley who gravitated to Hawkes Bay during the early seventies. Back in those days they had several NZ Softball reps in their strong lineup, including Barry Nichol, Wayne Baldwin and Basil McLean, who one TV commentator said had the biggest mouth in NZ Softball.  The club also played a lot of their games over at Marewa Park and also used the pavilion there as their Napier base.

    Leprauchan Comments

Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses. He’s not breathing and his eyes are glazed. The other guy whips out his cell phone and calls 911.

“I think my friend is dead!” he yells. “What can I do?”

The operator says, “Calm down. First, let’s make sure he’s dead.”

There’s a silence, then a shot. Back on the phone, the guy says, “Okay, now what?”

There's a big conference of beer producers. At the end of the day, all of the presidents of all beer companies decide to have a drink in a bar.

The president of 'Budweiser' orders a Bud, the president of 'Miller' orders a Miller Lite, Adolph Coors orders a Coors, and the list goes on. Then the waitress asks Arthur Guinness what he wants to drink, and much to everybody's amazement, Mr. Guinness orders a Coke!

"Why don't you order a Guinness?" his colleagues ask.

"Naah. If you guys won't drink beer, than neither will I."

An Englishman and a Scotsman were playing golf together when The Englishman's ball hit Paddy.

When Paddy came to, he said to The Englishman, That will cost you five thousand pounds in compensation.'

'But I said fore,' said The Englishman.

    I'll take it,' said Paddy.

We also look forward to seeing all rugby players, footballers, netballers, cricketers and softballers and friends at the clubrooms each Saturday  -  Pop in for cool Tui or two  - Also bring along your mates for an Ale and a chat.
