FINAL WHISTLE BLOWS FOR RESPECTED CLUB PATRON
The Napier Old Boys Marist Rugby Club's foundation Patron Bruce Hawkins passed away on Friday after a brief illness. Bruce, a life member of the former Napier High School Old Boys Rugby Club, as well as the now amalgamated club, was also a life member of the Hawkes Bay Rugby Union.
Arriving in Napier in 1931 from Central Hawkes Bay, Bruce joined the Napier High School Old Boys Club of which he remained an active member and administrator right through until the amalagamation in 1990. At the inaugural AGM both he and the late Frank Mahony were elected as joint Club Patrons of the new club. Bruce's lengthy involvement with the Hawkes Bay Rugby Union saw him attend nearly every union AGM since 1941, missing only two in the past 66 years!
Up until recently Bruce at 98, still regularly attended the club's games played at the clubs home ground, Tremain Field, Park Island where his favourite viewing spot was from his own 'corporate box' up on the clubrooms stage from where he had an elevated end on view of the game in progress.
Looking back on the amalagamation of the two proud McLean Park based clubs Napier High School Old Boys and Napier Marist in 1990, Bruce always said that this gave him a new lease of life at the time and he was whole heartedly behind the 'marriage' of the two great McLean Park rivals and whatever was best for the new club. Bruce, with his cheery personality was highly respected by the clubs' members and players from juniors through to the premiers and with his passing he will be sadly missed.
His life long service to rugby and the former Napier Old Boys club in particular was a real example to us all -
'Ask not what your Club can do for you, but what you can do for your Club'
