HISTORY OF TROPHY
Sportsman of the Year: The Sportsman of the Year Award is the main Club award and is given to a person who has worn the club colours with pride and through their achievements have made others proud to be a member of the club. Formally known as The TW Hercock Memorial Trophy named after Bill Hercock, a former Mayor of Napier and a Napier Marist Rugby Club chairman. The trophy was originally awarded to the Napier Marist Old Boys 'Sportsman of the Year', with the inaugural presentation being back made in 1970.
The following were the Napier Marist Old Boys Club winners:
1970 - Frank Murphy 1971 - John Reilly 1972 - Blair Furlong & Gary Condon. 1973 - Ian MacRae 1974 - Dan Weinberg 1975 - Pat Doig 1976 - Russell Exeter 1977 - Jock Eddy 1978 - John O'Rourke 1979 - Fred Harbottle 1980 - Jock McCarroll (R.I.P) 1981 - Dan Weinberg 1982 - Pat Benson 1983 - Peter O'Shaughnessy 1984 - Terry Phillips 1985 - Brent Nelson 1986 - Graham Weber 1987 - Irwin Wirepa 1988 - John Bird 1989 - Kevin Corkery 1990 - Pat Benson
In 2005 the Board thought it was time to update the cup so that it more readily encompassed the new NOBM club, so approached the Tremain family if they could create a new trophy called the KR Tremain Memorial Trophy after the late Kel Tremain (All Black legend & instumental in the amalgamation of the new club). They happily agreed & was first presented to Bevan Pickett in 2005 by Chris Tremain. This Cup was also engraved to include the other 14 names since the amalgamation of the 2 clubs in 1990.
Best Club Member: Formally know as The Donovan Cup, this was changed in 2005 to become the Blair Furlong Cup after the All Black & first Club President of the Club. This is awarded to a member who has gone out of their way to make the club a better place to be part of.
Best Club Spirited Player: Formally known as the Fish Cup, this was changed in 2005 to become the Ian MacRae Cup after the All Black & Life member of both the HBRU & the NOBM rugby Club. This is a true sportsmanship award, given to a player who puts the club success before the success of himself.
Supporter of the Year: Formally known as the Eric Jackson Trophy after the late Eric Jackson, a loyal supporter of the club, both before & after amalgamation, this was changed in 2005 to become the Peter Harris Memorial Cup after the former president of the club. The late Peter Harris was a great clubman & HB man who the club benefited greatly from due to his generosity & kindness. Awarded to those that support the club as a whole, on & off the pitch.
Age Grade Player Of The Year: This was discontinued in 2005 mainly due to the fact that the club only had one Age grade team. Past winners were: 1991 - Mark Tremain 1992 - Stefan Wilson 1993 - Kerry Rich 1994 - Aiden Gilhooly 1995 - Glen Varcoe 1996 - Glen Varcoe 1997 - Ben Lee 1998 - David Miles 1999 - Matthew Wiig 2000 - Richard Gilhooly 2001 - Ross Clements 2002 - Helaman Burgess 2003 - Steve Robinson 2004 - Josh Chrystal
