10.12.11
NOBM Rugby played Napier Pirates at Park Island on a very lively pitch at 'The Rock' on Park Island. We were lucky enough to win the toss and put Pirates in to bat first. Wickets tumbled quite regularly with us having them 77 - 8 at drinks. It helped when Zac Guildford ran out two players in the space of two balls trying to take quick singles. We soon had them 9 - 92 but a last wicket partnership between Pete Best & Steve Darroch's 10 y.o. grandson put on another 31 runs. Pete scoring all 31 until Rossco got the young fella out (Bully!!!). Mu Mete Kingi (Billy T) had the distinction of getting Zac's wicket and then getting out to the HB Tui's player and ex NOBM Junior rugby player Kristen Duffel. He now joined Greg (Flash) O'Shaughnessy to lose their wickets to girls!! R.Taylor 2 - 6, Chris O'Connor 2 - 12, Ross Clements 2 - 18. And 123 to chase!
Again we started off slowly but had only lost only three wickets at drinks 3 - 66. The wheels started to come off when we lost another three wickets soon after getting to 7 - 77. Chris O'Connor had been aggressive in getting to 27 and a good 24 to Rossco got us through to 117 before he lost his wicket LBW to Guildford! Some nerves when we lost another wicket to be 123 - 8 but Kurt Chambers & Rhod Curren managed to get us home to win by 2 wickets!

04/05 Season Review
A review of last season showed that we are becoming more social as we get older. The batting showed a bit of backbone when Alf made himself available and considering that we only had one win, that can’t have been too often.
Alfie played 6 times,395 runs, HS 135 and had a batting average of 65.83. Bowled only 16 overs taking 4 wickets @ 18.25 Only played in the easy games, rarely sighted at after match. The pram has a lot to answer for.
Big Rich played 10 games,204 runs, always promising 20.4 Showed a bit of pace when given the chance ,25 overs taking 7 wickets @ 13 Could bat either hand, wicket keep and still put the ball down. A good season but needs to stay out of the way of the odd baseball bat. Rarely sited at after match
TIM the Coull man, 11 games, HS 51, 136 runs @ 13.8 Bowled 48 overs taking 14 wickets @ 17.5 A good team man , did have the odd bad day in the field, hardly ever sighted at the after match.
AJ the surprise package with him playing 11 games, HS 47,belting 219 runs @19.9. Filled in at wicket keeper and even claimed a wicket bowling. Most valuable team player, keeping an eye on the books from a distance to fend off the audit dept.
Rowdy ,the reclusive one, played 7 games , HS 48. 100 runs @14.28 Bowled 31 overs, getting 6 wickets @ 25 Went AWOL near the end of season but up till then always made the after match. Got demoted to the 3rds for a game but will come back stronger from that.
Heil Pisshead. Made all the calls for a change but couldn’t organize the end of year pissup. 11 games , 36 runs @ 4 Bowled better but stats took a hiding against Tamatea. (Thanks Flash) 31 overs, 7 wickets @ 24.75 Might struggle to make team as a batsman so will have to concentrate on bowling. Maybe aiming at wooden things will help. Last seen at after match function running through a cover drive.
Seedo had the inclination but the body was going through a recession. 12 games, HS 26, 109 runs @ 9.9 Bowled the most overs,52 , 10 wickets @ 22 Left arm, sometimes spin but kept people guessing Reliable at the after match but always had to go to a BBQ
Kerry, just back from Pomme land wanted to get back on stride. 5 games, HS 26, 101 runs @ 20.2. Not bad, must have been the Indian bat, Bowled 20 overs, 2 wickets @ 73 Must have been there for his batting. AWOL at after match and will struggle this year with the pram.
Flash, fitted in 8 games between baby sitting. HS 30 in last game. 74 runs @ 9.25 Bowled 34 overs but claimed only 4 wickets @ 49 Refused to bowl against Tamatea. “ let someone else’s figures suffer” A regular at the after match.
Matua always had to be dragged out of bed. HS 41, 3 ducks, 150 runs @ 18.75 Injury restricted bowling (yeah right) 45 overs, 6 wickets @ 36 Rarely sighted at after match but shed 2 after midnight no problem.
Village managed a few appearances with his stuffed shoulder and wicket kept well. Played 6 games, 72 runs @ 14.4. HS 35 Bowled 3 overs for 20 runs The pram may keep him away this year a bit more.
Crunchie entertained with his fielding again. He strives for new heights. 8 games, HS 17,only 2 ducks (but not for want of trying) 39 runs @ 4.87 Bowled 26 overs, 1 wicket @ 91 Always a mystery as to when Crunchie will turn up.
Cam was keen this year playing 12 games. HS 27, 117 runs @ 9.75 23 overs , 3 wickets @ 49.33 Constable Cam was rarely sighted at the after match but promises to practice.
Mookie was just finding his way this year playing 8 games. HS 19, 4 ducks, 28 runs @ 3.8 Bowled 12 overs , 2 wickets @ 40 Great catch against Tamatea and look forward to seeing a sober Mookie next season.
Frank, seemed to have the odd Doris trouble which may or may not have affected his play. Played 10 games ,HS 16, 34 @ 3.4, 5 ducks Bowled 20 overs, 2 wickets @ 44 22 cartwheels, 43 handstands and 7 spankings. What more can we say!!! May have managed to get us through the Audit.
Chris O’Connor played 6 games HS 21 , 61 runs at 10.61 Bowled 12 overs, 2 wickets @ 35 Needs to work on running between wickets or maybe his partners.

NOBM a colourful lot - like their uniforms The name ``Napier Old Boys Marist Rugby Cricket'' sticks out like a sporting oxymoron in SportToday's weekend fixtures page on Wednesdays. It's quite common for cricket fans in summer to do a second take on the fourth-graders and ask: ``What are these guys about?''. Not many will say it openly but the NOBM Rugby Cricket Club players often conjure up images of cauliflower-eared, beer-swilling beefy blokes in jockstraps who cross-bat their way to wins on Saturdays. While that may be far-fetched, NOBM Rugby are in every sense of the word a ``social'' team. They are not afraid to indulge in a tipple. Their captains change every year and a blue-and-red clown's hat (with the devil's horns) is freely passed around when one of the boys makes a blunder while fielding. ``We were one of the first teams (in Hawke's Bay club cricket competition) to wear coloured clothing,'' team stalwart Brent Clements, who turned 50 last Thursday, tells SportToday. The green-and-yellow rugby socks with a white shirt and yellow shorts raised eyebrows among the Hawke's Bay Cricket Association but ``they felt we only played fourth grade so they'd leave us to it'', Clements explains, adding a lot of green and blue were added to their uniform over the seasons and the captain each season had been saddled with the responsibility of deciding what colour they would wear. They are wearing black and grey this season and Tim Seed, who also is the club rugby captain, picked the colours. ``Our vice-captains automatically become captains the following year. Reece Blundel is captain next year, and knowing him it could be pink,'' Clements says. The club started in the 1980-81 summer season when the rugby club paid the subs for about six players to form a cricket team to keep the liquor licence operating once the rugby season wound up. ``We played to keep the dough rolling in. Softball came in 1986-87 under Steve Glasspole.'' Clements, a prison warden at Mangaroa, says only a handful of the original members were cricketers and the rest were rounded up every week to make up a team of 11. Some of the stalwarts roped in to make numbers included premier rugby team manager Peter ``Bam Bam'' Bainbridge, 1984 rugby club captain and player Derek Woodford, current premier player Alan Gardiner and ex-captain Kerry Rich. ``We won a couple of games and always took the chilly bin with us. Now the chilly bins have just got bigger,'' says Clements, who started playing cricket about four seasons after the club was born. In the late 1980s, NOBM Rugby were fourth-grade joint winners with the now defunct Mallards Cricket Club. ``They went up to the third grade but we stayed. Most of the winners in the fourths often went up to thirds, except us.'' Some of their players often go away overseas then return to play. For example, Alex MacDonald is serving with the police force in East Timor. Clements' son, Ross, is doing his OE in Wales and Craig Riddiford, the clubroom accountant, has settled with his family in Scotland, but returns in April. Another player, Cameron Burn, has finished playing rugby in Ireland and is travelling through Scotland. Clements hopes to join Burn and son Ross in Britain to watch the Rugby World Cup in June. Current captain Seed was away for 17 years in England but he married and returned home to resume playing. Born in Palmerston North, Clements moved to Invercargill as a bank officer and to play rugby for Marist and over the years enjoyed the many Spillane tournaments he played in. ``I started off as a flanker but as you get older you become a lock.'' From 1973 he was courier driver until a decade ago when he became a prison warden. Rotating play and captaincy among all players is a pivotal element in the enjoyment they get out of cricket. ``We give everyone a few overs to bowl, even the wicketkeeper. Last weekend our wicketkeeper, Reece Blundell, got three wickets for five runs and we still lost,'' says Clement, conscious of the fact that half the team weren't even born when he was around. His elder son, Carl, lives in Sydney and has not played for six years but a fortnight ago he surprised him with a visit for an early birthday bash and rolled up his sleeves to bowl a few overs against Napier Boys' High School while a teammate dash off to buy some deep-fried chicken for lunch. He says with family commitments cricket becomes demanding but university students are keen to play in the 1pm matches that normally finish before 6pm. The club has had its share of ``big names'' pad up, including Richard Gilhooly, who ended up playing for the State Championship Wellington team. ``He did find the artificial pitches a wee bit hard to play on.'' Marty Akers and Andy Rennie, of Napier City Rovers fame, get a mention. ``Marty played for us as a wicketkeeper and Andy often fielded by the boundary so he could keep an ear to his transistor radio for horse-racing results.'' Former Hawke's Bay Magpies halfback John ``Chook'' O'Rourke and fullback Peter Daily made their cameo appearances, too. ``Peter played one game to fill in and scored a century. He went on to play for the prems for a seasons before I started playing,'' Clements says. NOBM Rugby's ``home pitch'' is the strip next to the tree by the clubrooms, punctuated by the boulders aptly dubbed ``The Rock''. This season they have not lost any games on it. A couple of them have been washed out. The club has more than 100 rugby playing members with director Terry Gittins at the helm. Clements has been refereeing since 1995 up to second division and even a couple of premier matches. He is thankful to sponsors. Over the years Westshore Hotel has supported them but Bluewater Hotel is the foundation. ``(Bluewater owner) Rodney Green comes over to have a few beers and chat with us now and then. He's a good Pirates man to support us,'' says Clements.

From the Napier Marist Brothers Old Boys Rugby Football Club “Team Talk” archives:
Team Talk December 1980: Marist Rugby Cricket. This year for the first time, the Rugby Club is fielding its own cricket team, which is playing in the 4th grade B competition. This team is completely independent of the Marist Cricket Club. The team organiser Mark Kearney, aided by a number of our club members, have some thirty interested part-time players on their books. At the time of going to print the rugby cricketers have recorded 1 win & 2 losses. Mark assures us that the boys will soon have their act together and improved results are on the way. The team is being sponsored by Graham Price of the Westshore Hotel.
Team Talk June 1981: A rather belated inaugural Presentation Evening was held at the Westshore Hotel for our Marist Rugby Cricket XI : - Best Bowler – Batsman : John O’Rourke - Best Fielder : Dave Scott - ‘Duck’ : Dave McNally Plus a special award to Graham Price for assistance to the team.

...................Reunion.................
25 Years of Rugby Players playing cricket was celebrated over the weekend of the 15th & 16th January 2005. Out of 114 players that had been paid up team members we were able to contact 101. Unfortunately 22 ex players are now residing overseas and were not able to make it. We received 65 responses from around NZ and 59 were able to attend the Saturday night dinner. This night was a great occasion with past players and partners catching up and plenty of old stories coming out. Paul & Vanessa Andrews made a special trip up from Nelson and then ‘Big Fella’, Dave Anderson & Anna came up from Wellington for a special appearance after being AWOL for a few years. Grant 'Benny' Bennett also made the trip from Gisborne. Good to see Murray Palmer, ‘Chippie” Terry Phillips, Dave Roberts, ‘CD’ Chris Downing & ‘Plow’ Kevin Plowman from the ‘originals’. Thanks for coming. The Saturday started with a competition game against Havelock, which was unfortunately lost, but a very vocal crowd reminded us what we had been missing over the last few years. The challenge was being put up for the Past v Present game to be held on Sunday. The meal was held at the Quayside restaurant above the BlueWater tavern and there was plenty of mixing and a few drinks prior. Thanks to special guests Lee & Brenda Ford & Eddie and Margaret Wilson for coming along and sharing the occasion. The reminiscing started and tales were being bandied about. Funny how time changes some of the stories but some of the classics still come out. (He opens the batting & bowling, He’s on the take, I’ve never had a duck, etc) The scorebook always tells the truth!!!! The evening had been well organized by Margaret Leahy & AJ and there were plenty of sponsored prizes on offer for some trivia questions. There were some great prizes on offer from the sponsors and it was good to see them shared around. Pisshead was allowed to make a short speech and he ran through the history of the team from the start, the sponsors and great trips that have occurred thanks to their generosity. Thanks to Dave Roberts for his great memory. AJ made a speech (Yes a SPEECH) and life membership was awarded to Brent Clements for services rendered over the years. (I wonder if the garage fire had anything to do with it?) Festivities continued throughout the night and plenty of banter continued about Sunday’s game. Sunday arrived and the numbers were good for the game. A slight hiccup with the Park Island game double booked for kid’s rep stuff. Down to Taradale Park and the ‘past’ out to bat. Paul Andrews and Grant Bennett opened the batting. Benny played his one defensive shot and then flayed at everything eventually being bowled by Pisshead. (9) Pisshead then took a screamer of catch to dismiss Andy (16) The Big Fella then changed the rules a bit and got rid of ‘ducks’, which Bradman was very grateful for. (1) Kerry had previously been reminded about who had dropped his eighth wicket 10 years earlier. ‘Wobbly’ Martin Akers then took advantage of Benny’s corrupt umpiring and smashed a quick 23 before Frank spun him out. Tony Stanford played like he had never been away before being caught for 18 off Cam. Wickets started to fall rapidly with Gazza Exeter (2) Bub’s Palmer (1) Chippie (9) Big Fella (5) not troubling the scorers too much. The Irish import Cam then came out giving an exhibition of unorthodox hitting (and bat holding) contributed 13 before being stumped off AJ. Quinney (1) and Barfly (Mike Clements) not out (2) finished it off. 115 all out. Not at all what was being talked up the night before. Frank being the main destroyer 3 – 15 Frank then opened with Pisshead and they put on 27 for the first wicket. Pisshead caught out charging Bradman and waking Stan up at deep midwicket. Stan again in the action when he caught Frank who had been plundering the attack (25) Flash (1) failed to start then Kerry with some big hitting (25) kept the momentum going. 68 – 4 Seedo (8), Cam (6), Village (Reece Blundell) (3) bought it up to 97 – 8. The game was getting interesting at this stage, especially when Crunchie smacked Bradman for a couple of fours before Quinney pulled off an outstanding one handed catch to dismiss him. (Didn’t want to drop his can) 111 – 9 Alf (Darren Goodall) & Big Rich (Richard Atkins – North) then saw the present team win by one wicket against all predictions. A great day now back to the clubrooms for further festivities where revenge was made in the boat race. Past winning 2 – 1 Clubrooms closed and Frank’s nightclub opened with the hardy ones continuing. Big Fella and Anna unfortunately missing this by having to catch the 5pm flight home. Not too many of this lot made work on Monday. A great weekend was had by all and thanks to you all for attending and participating. See you at the NEXT ONE!!!!
