CHAIRMAN’S REPORT 2010/11 SEASON. 1 AUGUST 2011.

Another season has past and this must be my 26th Chairman’s report (must be some sort of record).   I moved to the Bay in 1975 and immediately was made secretary for the club (Colenso Pirates), then after 3 years took on the roll of Secretary/Treasurer, and in 1984/5 season was elected President/Chairman.   That makes 36 continuous years on the committee.  Then we went through 2 different amalgamations, first with Napier Old Boys, then with Marist.   BUT, it is now with profound regret that this is to be my last Chairman’s report.   With all the operations I have had over the last 4 years and my increasing difficulty to speak, I cannot stand as a committee member anymore, and therefore retire.
This year our Premier team won the 20/20 Tournament and the 4th Grade H.B.Hobblers won their Grade and the round robin championship.   Well done for those two teams.   In addition Mathew Sinclair won the award for the fastest Century, Keiren Noema-Barnett the Villers Cup for the Premier Batting Average, and Doug Bracewell (for the 3 year running) the best under 20 player
Congratulations to all club members who made higher honourers.   Our Central Districts  Reps, Mathew Sinclair, Kieran Barnett, Doug Bracewell and those who played for Hawkes Bay.
We have a huge problem with the number of local players in our Premier and Senior teams and at our last committee meeting of the year, I formed a new steering committee, to be led by Del Whyte to come up with ideas and solutions to this problem and to look at the coaching position.
Our Junior Cricket also had a few problems this last season and more assistance will be needed to get all our Juniors back on track
Subs were again a little disappointing this season, with only 56 financial members, which included 17 non playing members and there were some members who paid part subs. We need to address this problem next season and try to get subs in, as early as possible,
The club applied for funding to the value of $98105 and was granted $31840.  This was a great help to the club and if funding, was ever cancelled to small clubs, to play the game of cricket, you would be looking at subs of $300+ and selling heaps of raffles.   So we must appreciate the following Trusts who have assisted our club.   NZ Community Trust, Infinity, Southern Trust, Endeavour Trust, Pub Charity, Lion Foundation and Eastern and Central.

Once again I would like to thank the assistance of our committee members in the running of our great club and especially Del, who took over when I was away sick, Andrew for his continuous support and Glen for his extra work.
(Lee Ford) CHAIRMAN

LATEST NEWS:

Results from Saturday 10th December - Report from Andrew Frame

Today was the second “Pavilion Day” of the season at Nelson Park.

NOBM Prems batted first against Taradale and made 241 for 8, with Harry Ghodke (35) Bevan Pollock (58) and Todd Astill (68) the main contributors.
A tight chase ensued. Todd taking 2 for 60 off 12 overs, Matt J taking 2 for 54 off 14 and Pavan Kaushik’s 2 for 15 off 10 overs keeping the visitors under control. Going into the last over Taradale needed 3 runs with only one wicket remaining. Unfortunately they were up to the task, reaching 245/9.
The Prems will need a good result next week to ensure a top placing in their competition.

NOBM Seniors faced (a NOBMCC coached) St Johns with the schoolboys batting first and making 172/7. Sherwin Pillay taking 3/37 and Tom Mellor 2/27.
Despite the best efforts of Sherwin again with the bat this time (scoring a half century before being ‘caught’ off a bump ball), the seniors went down, all out for 124.

NOBM 3rds played Tech and batted first to be 174 for 7 after their 40 overs. Michael Copp unlucky to end on 49 after spending over 35 of those overs batting and Josh O’Brien’s 33 the main contributors.
Tech’s batting was just too strong, though, reaching 175 for the loss of only 3 wickets. Michael taking 1/20 and M. Ali 1/24.

NOBM Hobblers played Cornwall Danger Island with the islanders (literally, for those who have not heard of them before) scraping past 20 overs to make 131. Peter Nixon’s 3/26 and Corky’s 2 for 34 (plus a run out) the main destroyers.
Opening the batting once again James Whyte too to Cornwall’s bowling, smashing his maiden half century (53) with Stu Farnworth (47) returning from injury to almost join him in the 50’s as the Hobblers reached the total with six wickets in hand.

NOBM Rugby played Napier Pirates at Park Island on a very lively pitch at 'The Rock' on Park Island. We were lucky enough to win the toss and put Pirates in to bat first. Wickets tumbled quite regularly with us having them 77 - 8 at drinks. It helped when Zac Guildford ran out two players in the space of two balls trying to take quick singles.
We soon had them 9 - 92 but a last wicket partnership between Pete Best & Steve Darroch's 10 y.o. grandson put on another 31 runs.  Pete scoring all 31 until Rossco got the young fella out (Bully!!!).   Mu Mete Kingi (Billy T) had the distinction of getting Zac's wicket and then getting out to the HB Tui's player and ex NOBM Junior rugby player Kristen Duffel.  He now joined  Greg (Flash) O'Shaughnessy to lose their wickets to girls!!   R.Taylor 2 - 6, Chris O'Connor 2 - 12, Ross Clements 2 - 18.  And 123 to chase!

Again we started off slowly but had only lost only three wickets at drinks 3 - 66. The wheels started to come off when we lost another three wickets soon after getting to 7 - 77. Chris O'Connor had been aggressive in getting to 27 and a good 24 to Rossco got us through to 117 before he lost his wicket LBW to Guildford!  Some nerves when we lost another wicket to be 123 - 8 but Kurt Chambers & Rhod Curren managed to get us home to win by 2 wickets!

NOBM Women’s competition has wound up for this half of the season already, though the CD Hinds were playing at Cornwall Park.

Back at the Pavilion:
Downey’s meat packs went to: Andy from Taradale CC (x2) and Dan Whyte.  Paul from HBCA chipped in with a draw for a free drink going to Glen Walklin and Dave Herrick.  Peter Nixon won the HBI East Pier Draw.
The Sideline Bar draw drew out Josh O’Brien’s name, but he wasn’t there to claim the prize, so it jackpots to $150 for Sunday’s Children’s Christmas Party.

OLD STUFF

- CONGRATULATIONS -
Old Boys Marist take out Championship title

CHAMPIONS OF HAWKE'S BAY

Copy courtesy 'Hawkes Bay Today'  Sports scribe Hamish Bidwell

Champions of Hawke's Bay.  For a long time it seemed as though that statement and the name Napier Old Boys' Marist would never be bedfellows.
Despite assembling decent teams in the last season or two, there was just something about them that suggested they'd always flatter to deceive. And the longer that went on, the more the problem seemed to be one guy.
If GJ Gardner Homes NOBM coach Tony Pothan had a dollar for every knife that's been stuck in his back, he'd be a rich man. He's been a figure of ridicule in some circles, and people have often taken delight in saying that Marist couldn't become Hawke's Bay club cricket champions with him at the helm.
Well, after taking the two-day title a few weeks ago, Pothan's side have now added the overall crown. So, if you'll excuse the corny question, ``how does it feel, Tony?''
``It's pretty satisfying from my point of view, to be able to shut a few people up out there,'' Pothan told SportToday.
``I might not be the best technical coach in the game, but I'm proud of my man-management and communication skills and the way I've been able to develop a culture of professionalism and success. We've won two titles and now we want to go on and win the one-dayers and then maybe the Twenty20, to show people that the club is in good spirits.
``This club was in ruins four or five years ago. We were at the bottom and no-one wanted to play for us. We had some dicey individuals come to the club, but we've sifted them out and it's been great to finally realise the potential that was always there.''
Despite their success, there will still be some people who argue that a monkey could've won Marist the championship this season, such was the money they'd spent to assemble their squad.
How does Pothan react to that?
``There is a perception out there that we have bought a lot of players,'' Pothan began.
``But we've simply created an environment that players want to be in and excel in. Everyone knows that we pay one player and everyone knows who that player is and every club in Hawke's Bay would be glad to have his services.
``If offering players the opportunity to coach within the club and the schools' programme is paying players, then that's all we've ever done. With guys like (Andrew) Niblett and (Keeley) Todd, all we did was provide them with the chance to work within our coaching programmes and that's all we've ever done.
``But I have to say that the whole key to this year has been the performance of our regular club players. We knew that when we had our full-strength side on the park, that we'd do very well.
``We also knew that we'd lose them to CD and Hawke's Bay and have to rely on other guys. I'm talking about people like Big Red (Craig Herrick), who's taken 35 wickets and really stood up big time. Other guys like (Darren) Rush and (Bevan) Pollock have gone from being average club cricketers, to good club cricketers.
``Another guy like Stu O'Connor, who drives up from Wellington to play, has added a huge amount of experience.''
And what of the bloke who's been with Pothan almost every step of the way? His captain Dave Bovey.
``Daz has been great for this club and for four years he's put in a tremendous amount of work. His personality is such that people want to play under him. He's good in the changing rooms and even in the hard years, it was his humour that kept things going.''

                                                              -----------------------------------------------

CHAIRMAN'S REPORT  2007/2008 SEASON
Another season has rolled on by and it will not be long before the new season is upon us.  This past season was one of mixed fortunes for the Club.  With the 4th Grade Hobblers going right through the season as the only unbeaten team within the Association and the Ladies, once again winning their Grade and losing only one game.   The Premiers who we all hoped would repeat the winning of the previous season, unfortunately had a few hiccups, but nevertheless still had an enjoyable season.  The 3rd Grade have continued their team building and had a much improved season, especially the first round and with a little more luck during the 2nd part of the draw, could have made the finals.  The 4th Grade Rugby, as always had a very sociable season and were the talk of the grades with their gorgeous PINK shirts !

Congratulations to all club members who made higher honours.  Hawkes Bay, C.D., and especially Mathew Sinclair and Rachel Priest who both reached New Zealand International honours.

Once again our  club had problems with the overseas Pro, who expected everything but gave little back.  I really believe it is not worth the money and committee members time to have an overseas Pro, who you have to pay his fares, accommodation,  food and pay him to coach and sometimes to find a part time job for.

Our Junior cricket responsibilities suffered last year with Tony Pothan now working fulltime, our overseas Pro not fulfilling his coaching obligations and Shane Gibson and Peter O'Shaughnessy no longer able to assist.   All we had was Gary Leahy who was able to look after one age group team.  Gary and I have had off season meetings and I am pleased to report that we now do have more volunteers.  Also a whisper is that our new Sponsor is also assisting our Junior Cricket programme.

Once again I would lke to thank all of our committee members who performed outstandingly to keep our Club running smoothly and in a professional manner.

On behalf of the club I would like all members to realise and appreciate the assistance our club gets from various Community Trusts.   Without this assistance, most of you would not be able to afford to play the game.   I would like you to thank The Lion Foundation, Infinity Trust, Eastern and Central Community Trust, Pub Charity, NZCT and The Southern Trust

                                                                     NAPIER OLD BOYS MARIST CRICKET

                                                 Welcome Back - 20007/08 Season

Welcome back to all past club members and our newest players for the Premiers, Evon McInnis, Tim Lythe and Doug Bracewell. Evon joins us from the West Indies where he has represented Jamaica playing two first class matches. Evon is a pace bowler who can also bat a bit (can’t we all). Tim joins us from Auckland and has played 9 first class matches. He is an off spinner as well as a handy batsman with a first class average of 27. He has already shown his prowess with the bat in resurrecting a stuttering OBM innings against CHB in the first day of 2 dayer. He was ably supported by the third of our new players in Doug Bracewell. Doug is a CD age group representative from the Wairarapa. He is a pace bowler and also shines with the bat.

To all new players to the club a warm welcome and I hope you enjoy your association with NOBM Cricket Club. The premier team looks very strong again this year and has the players assembled to repeat the dose of last year. The Senior’s too have a solid side with plenty of players to select from. This competition for places can only be good for the club and I hope the Seniors continue their improved showings of the previous two seasons.

The third grade is practicing regularly (no misprint) and no doubt will benefit from this unusual occurrence. The Hobblers had their annual practice over Labour Weekend and sore aching bodies were in abundance the following day. The Ladies likewise have started practicing and I am sure they are ready to defend their title from last year. The successful initiatives implemented last season are again available with the cash draw for financial members sponsored by the Sideline Bar, the HB Insurance draw sponsored by Bill Reilly as well as the MVP prizes at the end of year prize giving and the usual Bacon Raffle. Once again welcome back and here’s to a great season of cricket.

                                                                                      MAJOR SPONSOR
We are fortunate to have as the major sponsor for the club, G.J.Gardner Homes. They again have naming rights for the year and I hope that our relationship with them will be a long and fruitful one for both parties. G.J.Gardner Homes is New Zealand’s favourite home builder and are certainly the people to see to build your new home. Thinking of building a new home? See them today! Sponsorship of this type allows the club to offer the ‘extras’ such as the children’s Christmas Party and to keep our subs the lowest in the Bay.

The Sideline Bar Onekawa is again sponsoring the cash draw at the club rooms each week. Club members are encouraged to support our sponsor after practice nights or when you are ‘out on the town’.

Hawkes Bay Insurances Prize Package.  Once again thanks to Bill Reilly and Hawke’s Bay Insurance, for again sponsoring an East Pier prize-voucher to be awarded at the end of season prize giving. Once you have paid your subs you will automatically be in the draw which will take place each Saturday. The only stipulation is that you must be in the clubrooms at the time of the draw. At the Annual Prize giving, all weekly winners names will be put in a hat and the winner will be drawn.

                                                                                              2007/08 SUBS
There has been no increase of subs this year after a slight increase two years ago. Our subs still remain the lowest in HB by far and give members great value for money. Please remember that as part of your subs, you must also sell one book of twenty tickets in our Christmas raffle either to others or to yourself.
Premiers and Seniors                      $150
Ladies                                            $100
Third Grade                                    $100
Fourth Grade                                  $100
Non playing (social members)          $20

                                                                                           CASH DRAW
Each playing Saturday there will be a cash draw in the clubrooms no later then 8.00pm for $100. To be eligible for the draw you have to have paid your subs and you have to be present at the draw. If the cash is not struck then the prize jackpots to the next week. The draw will be made every scheduled playing day regardless of whether there was play that day. This draw has been made possible by the generous sponsorship of the Sideline Bar Onekawa.

                                                                                   INCENTIVE PAYMENTS

Once again the club is able to offer incentive payments for excellent performance on the field. These players are available to all financial playing members and are achievable by everyone whether you be a batsman, bowler or fielder.  Members have up to the 1st of December to pay their subs to qualify for past incentives (ie achieved prior to December 1st). If subs are paid after that date, incentives will only be paid from the date of payment. The following incentives are available -
Premier and Senior                         3rd Grade,   Presidents and Ladies
50 runs      $25                               50 runs                $15
100 runs    $60                               100 runs              $30
150 runs    $80                               4 wickets             $1
200 runs    $100                             5 wickets             $25
5 wickets   $40                               6+ wickets           $30
Plus $10 for each Additional wicket. Any player in any grade will receive $25 for four fielding dismissals.

                                                                                                    RAFFLES
As usual, subs are kept to a minimum by the selling of raffle tickets by each club member. As for last year we have the traditional “booze raffle” with some food added, which has always been an easy sell raffle ticket, particularly with Christmas just around the corner.

In addition to the annual subs, each club member is required to sell (or buy) 20 raffle tickets. Most club members have no trouble selling these tickets and many come back for more. If you are able to sell more than 20 (and this is quite easy if you are in a large workplace) please help out by requesting extra tickets.
